Indiscrimate Suspension Of OAU Students by oluwaseyi1992(m): 10:39pm On Jan 19, 2016
THE SUSPENSION OF STUDENTS' UNION LEADERS ON OAU CAMPUS ANOTHER TYRANNY: ANOTHER VICTIMIZATION Gentlemen of the Press, The vicious cycle and same pattern adopted by the Obafemi Awolowo University management in silencing the constructive yearnings of the students is not only oppressive but unconscionable Omotayo Akande, a brilliant and charismatic 500L Chemical Engineering student and also President of the Great Ife Students Union, Oluwaseun Oketooto, an assertive and articulate 400L Psychology Student and the Secretary General of the student union, Emmanuel Ojedokun a Vibrant and hard working 400L International Relation students and the PRO of the union who all have about 2 months to finish their degree programme have been suspended for six, four and four semesters respectively. What is their offence? I also asked. We must say that Olawale Owolabi has been suspended for 6 years by the management of Obafemi Awolowo University for standing against the acceptance fee increment since 2011. It is excruciatingly unfortunate that our ivory tower which should exemplify freedom and liberation not only epitomises injustice but enthrenches the the act of blatant oppression. This saddened development on OAU campus render' us hopeless and put us in doubt of what the future hold for our dear country. Students of Obafemi Awolowo University kicked off a national campaign for proper welfare condition which was well expressed in all forms of media. The leadership of the Union after exhausting diplomacy for a whole semester even in the face of collapsing structures and obvious castigations from students on thier perceived weakness to take up the mnagement, embarked on an unprecedented media campaign. I have not witnessed such expression of terrible welfare condition on the media. All newspapers in Nigeria at a point capture the picture and got commentaries of our dilapidated hostel, same as saharareporters, Channels i-report, wikipedia and major bloggs. The campaign was backed up with a day peaceful lecturer boycott. The tyranny started when the management imposed a mid-semester break on the students who were just demanding a commensurate improvement in the welfare condition based on the recent increment in school fees. The activities of the union was later suspended. The union continued their press and media campaign throughout the period. The management ploy was to frustrate the movement by letting students stay at home for long and they offered ASUU a 56-days leave in the middle of an academic session. This further exposed the insensitivity of the Prof Bamitale Omole led administration. After ASUU disgracefully rejected the offer, management could not but announce resumption. Prof Bamitale Omole, the incumbent VIce-Chancellor characterized for his intransigence, a Professor of International Relation who is expected to excerise full diplomacy have settled for the disdainful act of victimising students that lay a simple demand for improvement welfare which even caught the attention of the presidency. The suspended students are at the mercy of their fellow students who as a result of apathy and fear of likewise victimization have started attending lecturers. We must also understand that the charade given by the management that the suspension was as a result of an assault on a professor was frivolous and refutable. The Nigeria students must not watch as this highest from of oppression lingers in tertiary institutions. We hereby call on the union leaders to immediately issue a statement confirming and make popular their suspension and not keep it for friends and inner circle members. The cause they fought for is popular and just which the civil right movement are ready to take up and also ready to demand a probe of the Prof Bamitale Omole's administration. We hereby call on all Nigerian students and the leadership of NANS, Labour unions, civil right organisation and the federal government to immediately intervention in the ugly situation on OAU campus and checkmate the tyranny of Prof Bamitale Omole.
