I was invited to an interview which was held yesterday in their headquarter office. I thank God all went well not untill I was asked how much I think the company can pay me? But my response was 50k but am afraid if I have bleeped up for saying that or is it appropriate or not. I want my dear nairalanders in the house to please advice me on the implication of this pay level to ur success in getting ur desired job

alright pls next time try thinking about that before you go for the interview. Dnt sweat it, if you are successful, dats not the amount u will be paid tho...

@ O.P the thing is. Simple, 50k for what qualification, if it's SSCE, I think it's fair, plus what role, mind you, you didn't give details to that, so 50k is sure above minimum wage if only you are not a graduate. So give details of the role and your qualification.

HND graduate of business administration

When next u are asked that kind of question,ensure u avoid stating an amount. You could say, "I believe that a reputable company like urs can pay me a fairly reasonable and motivating amount, which will not affect their budgeted profit". Leave the interviewer to struggle with the meaning.
Always make ur responses as short as possible

If you really impressed them on technical questions during the interview, I think salary issues wouldn't be why they'll drop you. It's clear you didn't ask above what they would have paid you, that might have caused being dropped for asking too much.

Just remain hopeful and prayerful. Next time, do as amiLaHoit said. Just tell them to pay you within the company's salary structure for the position you're being interviewed for and tell them working is even more of a priority than the salary (especially if you're a young graduate), though all na lie, we all need fat salary.

BTW, did you apply online and do any test or just dropped hard copy CV through someone?

I'm also expecting an interview, reason I asked.

Which business unit; oil refinery, sugar, cement or what? What month did you apply; Aug or Nov?

There is nothing bad in quoting 50K, if the HR is up to standard and you are qualified for the job. Am sure they will pay you the normal salary.

Happened to a friend of mine once. Just pray you are actually selected first.

Mention a specific amount only when the interviewer insists .Your research on that role should guide you.
