Rising from an emergency congress meeting of the association at the union’s secretariat in Jos, the Branch Chairman, Chris Piwun, expressed satisfaction with the agreement arrived between the union and the school as well as the conduct of the members which resulted in suspending the industrial action.
Students of UNIJOS have been at home for three months, following the strike embarked on by their lecturers over several issues affecting the academic staff of the university. Issues in contention include payment of deductions from the academic staff union members, post graduate allowance, absorption of the staff of remedial science and Centre for Continuing Education into parent departments. Others are the inclusion of earned academic allowance in the monthly salaries of staff of the university as well as election of heads of departments instead of selection.

After a truce was brokered by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development between the school authority and the union, a special congress was convened where the industrial action was suspended after an understanding was reached among the concerned parties. With the suspension of the strike and resumption of academic activities at the institution, all parties are expected to respect the Memorandum of Understanding and adhere strictly to the pact in order to avoid any other industrial action that can jeopardise the learning process of the students. Students of the university lost a semester in their academic calendar owing to the strike.
The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Solomon Dalung was a lecturer in the university’s Law Department before his appointment as Minister.
This is actually good news to all students and aspirants of UNIJOS.
The institution is expected to resume academic activities Monday January 25th, 2016
