Joshua lost his parents eight years ago to a plane crash in the mid-month of that year. They had gone for his aunt's wedding in Lagos and on their way back they encountered what made their only child an orphan.Mr&Mrs Okah had planned to travel back to Bayelsa by land but their decision was changed by their wallet's ego.Three months after their departure that pride-stricken decision of theirs made Joshua a waif.Love and care slowly drifted away from him as good sympathizers were no longer coming around as before. It was as if they had forgotten the way to his late parents' house where some normally ate jollof rice. They avoided him as though he had A's only in Agricultural science and Igbo language in his senior secondary examinations. Some of them made promises that were usually made by drunkards to their wives during peace talks.Knowing them as vain talkers,Joshua avoided them like plagues but still kept an eye on their promises hoping that a miracle might occur.
"Take this #200 for your birthday celebration" were the words that brought Joshua back to the world. He had been thinking deeply about the demise of his parents and the dictionary sized promises made by some promisors to him when the scanty room he occupied echoed the words of his aunt that was still standing behind him.He tried to make up a smile but he was successful in getting a fake one that would enable him conceal his actual mood to his aunt.Being taught to be content with whatsoever he had,he made do with the smile he was having and walked up to his aunt with the words "thank you aunty" escaping from his mouth. The words came as though they had been set free from captivity because he was not expecting anything from his aunt for his birthday although what he received hugged nothing when it came to birthday allocations in the family of Mr&Mrs Nwaiwu.Birthday celebrations of others in the family of the Nwaiwu's had this aura of liveliness and jubilation but that of Joshua was as though there had been power outage for 3weeks in a day.As aunty Amaka walked past the door of Joshua's room unintentionally leaving behind the fragrance of the perfume she was wearing in there,Joshua remembered the extraordinary promises made to him by her.
Mrs.Nwaiwu Amaka had convinced him of a new and better life as if it were in her power to give salvation. Her sugar coated tongue did the trick for her as she was able to convince the homeless child with some of her sarcastic promises. The only reasonable promise she kept was to accomodate him although what he saw was not what he had been told about. When making this specific promise,Amaka sounded as if she had prepared a place in heaven for him but true to that promise she did that. She perfectly kept to that promise as she provided a dungeon for him although that was not what Joshua thought when his ears were spread like cocoyam leaves receiving sunlight to her lies.Joshua's day to day life seemed to him that he had been unlocking locked up promises in his aunt's heart. He looked at the #200 given to him with contempt, realizing that he had unlocked another promise."The pump price for a litre of petrol is #200",Joshua talked to himself with shock. He realized that his birthday allocation was equal to the price of a standard quantity of the most scarce commodity in town....

Ignoring the fact that he had looked down on his extraordinary birthday package,Joshua zoomed out of his room as if he was fleeing from the sin of fornication with the money given to him.He actually had nothing in mind to do with the money but with the feeling that he will surely stumble on something he left the house. On getting outside,he went to a newspaper vendor across the road to get some relevant information that would revive his sporting life.
The last time he had watched a football match was when his aunt travelled to Aba to buy goods and he was told she would not return that day.He successfully sneaked out without her husband knowing and to him he had won a fight with both eyes closed for the first time.It was at the viewing centre he lost his voice to the team he supported as he was recognized for shouting at intervals. His favourite team missed so many good chances and for each chance missed, his default voice was heard manually.Luck was on his side as his efforts were not in vain, the team he supported scored a goal towards the end of the match and that earned Joshua joy and the team he supported victory. When he got home he was stripped of the joy he had acquired with his voice as he surprisingly met his aunt,Amaka at home.Information is indeed power, but the one Joshua got before sneaking out crippled his joy and confidence as his aunt had changed her mind and returned that day she left.Although she came home late, the champions league loudspeaker came home after her and he regretted that day...

He had now left the newspaper stand and heading towards the same viewing centre that enabled him to successfully lose his voice that day,he stopped by to purchase popcorn. This was his favourite snack during the good old days although he hated when the corn fibers got stuck between his teeth.Since he started living with his aunt, the sweet aroma from the mini popcorn factory across the road belonged to him anytime he walked past there. But this time around he will have both to himself and that thought gave Joshua maximum joy. While waiting for his popcorn,he decided to keep his eyes busy by making them wander from left to right."Oga take your popcorn!",with his mind still focusing on what he had just seen,Joshua took the popcorn as a frequent communicant would take the communion wafer and left the place. He had just seen a guy come out of a shop with joy in his heart and cash in his hand and he felt it was necessary to know the cheerful giver.Joshua thought of it as cheerful because the economic situation is bad yet there is a giver...
