Yes

If yes, what makes it that way?

Soul has the freedom of choice. There is absolutely no compulsion in life. If Soul feels that is the place where he will have more experiences that will teach It about God's love that is where It will go. What matters is the lessons learnt and not where it is being learnt.

Again, if an eckist choose to walk away from the ECKANKAR (religion), does this put him in conflict with the living eck master?

Not at all.
It still boils down to the freedom of choice which Soul has and no one can take it away.

Soul can choose to take Its time in the journey back to God and go through more side tracks. Eckankar offers a direct path to God cutting through all the illusions of materiality and social trappings which has encumbered most other paths and offers Soul the opportunity in a single lifetime to achieve God realization which ordinarily takes multiple lifetimes to achieve.
This in itself is not easy at all. To be made to account for all your past and present deeds in one lifetime can be a very daunting challenge which many Souls are not ready to undergo.

Some start and along the way are overwhelmed and decide to take a break.
It doesn't matter at all. The Master is always there waiting for every Soul whenever they are ready to restart the journey. Either in this lifetime or any other lifetime the soul so chooses.
There is absolutely no conflict at all.
