Preparing for an interview can be a tough and harrowing prospect for a lot of people. Perhaps what is most agonizing is the myriad of preparations that have to be made before the D-Day. Not only do you have to be physically ready, you also have to ensure you are mentally in shape for any questions that may be thrown at you. This article is primarily written for people who are about to go through job interviews, but the points raised can be applied to a whole range of other situations. If you or someone you know will attend an interview, either for a job, a loan, or even for a routine assessment, it is important that the following four Cs be at your fingertips.
1 COMPATIBILITY
Before you even attend the interview, it is important you first find out how compatible you are with the company. It pays to carry out a bit of investigative research before you go for your screening. Things you should find out include, salary and remuneration for the position you are going for, ideals and values of the company, work hours, opportunities for advancement as well as special privileges. This way you have the double advantage of first of all knowing if you will be able to fit into the organization, as well as having something to say if you are asked on any aspect of the job you propose to do. These days, a question most favored by interviewers is ''How much do you expect to be paid?''. If you carry out your compatibility research properly, you should be able to answer this confidently at the drop of a hat.
2 CARRIAGE
It is a known fact that first impressions last. Visual assessment of each candidate plays a huge role at interviews. Your carriage in this case is not only limited to what you are wearing, but also, your confidence when answering questions, your assertiveness when making a point as well as your boldness in addressing issues and points that are raised. Whatever you do, do not do either or all of the following-fidget, stutter, break eye contact or answer too quickly or too slowly. Your personality should fill the room before you even begin to talk and make sure that you ponder each question carefully before you answer. Take it easy, you will be fine.
3 COMMUNICATION
Your choice of words, as well as the way you use them goes a long way in giving your potential employers a peep into your level of intelligence. Though it is not advisable to use difficult words and high sounding grammar as this may confuse your audience, it is essential that you convey your points in the best English (Or the official Lingua Franca) and as much as possible, avoid grammatical errors. These days, there are a lot of people who are graduates but have little to show for it in terms of their spoken English, as well as general communication skills. So you should make an effort to improve your communication by polishing your grammar, and keep on practicing. You will get it right.
4 COMMITMENT
Your employer is interested only in how much value an employees willing to add to his company, because the aim of every business organization is to expand in terms of market shares and revenue. Now put yourself in the position of that person interviewing you on behalf of your potential employer, I am sure the first thing that would interest you is how much the person sitting across the table is able and willing to offer the company. Therefore, it is okay to have a good plan for the company, but you must be able to articulate yourself to your interviewers in order for them to understand exactly what you can and will offer. Let them see your level of commitment and they will commit to hiring you.
In conclusion, I understand that undergoing interviews can be a terrifying experience for some people, while for others who are veterans of the board room, it may be another routine in an otherwise boring day, therefore, different people will require various levels of preparation to attend the same interview, you can however always start with the few points i have raised and work with them. Practice them till you are as near perfect as possible, but above all, relax, you will be fine.
