So people really think that PHCN, DISCO or what so ever the call them dont make profit. Since I am of adult age in Nigeria, I have never seen where NEPA, PHCN, DISCO willingly come to fix faulty transformers/electric lines or poles. It is the people who will contribute money to buy transformers, poles and cables. Yet people pay bills. take for example, a typical city of about 500,000 residents, if only 50,000 pay a average bill of 1000 naira a month, that is will amount to, 50m. in one month, in a year that will be about 600m. if we have about 10 cities in Nigeria with only 50,000 (fifty thousand) consumers paying electricity bill, then we are talking about 6billion in 1 year. This is excluding industrial users/consumers, whose bills run into tens of thousand of naira. There spend little or nothing in maintaining the distribution infrastructure, as individual consumer are made to contribute money to fix transformers, electric cables or poles.
So if you do the maths for the whole nation, a lot of money is been generated by this so call NEPA, PHCN, DISCO- in the neighbourhood of tens if not hundreds of billions every year. What do they do with the income. They always make people feel they dont generate any money.

Increasing the tarrif does not solve the problem. They have to check the corruption in that sector first.

Again if the companies can not meet up with the supply or generation because of the value of Naira that is depreciating, how then do you think the poor populace will meet up with paying an increased tarrif. Salaries are not been increased, the reduced value of the Naira is affecting every one, not only the govt.

You need to distinguish between the government-owned NEPA/PHCN, and the privately-run discos. There's nothing surprising about NEPA/PHCN not maintaining infrastructure, as that is what is to be expected of a public-sector organization with no profit motive or ownership to incentivize its management. NEPA/PHCN negligence is no different from what you'd expect when you go into any government office and see useless, sleeping "workers" telling you "oga no dey", or "wetin you go dash me"? It's not as if they will be promoted faster or earn more money if they do a good job.

The situation of the private-sector discos is very different: if they can expect to make a profit from distributing electricity, and they only get to charge for what they distribute, then they will have every incentive in the world to make sure that their infrastructure is well-maintained. It's precisely because of the first reason I mentioned that the tariffs need to be raised.

In other words, the picture you describe actually helps to illustrate the need for an increase in tariffs.

Do Nigerians really want to pay for anything?

Shut discos down, and u will spend more on diesel and petrol for your generators.

IMO, the agitation should be for all households getting prepaid meters because millions of Nigerians still use energy for free and they few metered ones bears the brunt. If you see a friend bypass a meter report them. They are doing the country a disservice.

The discos are not in it to lose. I was told each disco purchase energy from gencos based on how much they were able to recoup. Therefore, the more money they make, the more energy they will demand, then their will be motivation for gencos to quickly invest to generate more. And, then we can be on the road to uninterrupted power supply.

If you start agitation and shut down of business, how many are we going to shut down? As if Nigeria is not backwards enough.

I can only see 1 PERSON that can reason with his God given brain........God bless you . MOST people here on Nairaland re myopic, the worst part is that its there fathers that pay the bill not them.
GreatAgb:
i think we lump things together too much in this country and end up muddling up everything with little results to show for our efforts. our demand should be very clear, which are

1. supply prepaid meters so that consumers pay for what they consume

2. agitate for a reduction or resist an increment in tariff IF/WHEN there are no justification for the present price of a unit of energy or a proposed increment

3. Agitate for improved power supply both in QUANTITY and QUALITY

my point is these three items are actually independent of each other.

a. when someones says they should not increase tariff if prepaid meters are not supplied, then i will quickly ask, so they can increase tariff arbitrarily just because you have a meter? of course not! you might end up not being able to pay for the energy you need.

b. some other person says tariff should not be increased after all power supply is still poor. same question in item (a) applies as well.

my take on this issue is that the FG should compel the DISCOs to give EVERY consumer a prepaid meter. increase the tariff such that the discos can make profit and then subsidise the tariff for consumers to a value an average Nigerian can pay. power consumption is something that can easily be monitored hence corruption in the energy consumption subsidy can be managed to the barest minimum.

Nlc should keep its opinions to itself as it does not speak for the masses.
This is another of their drain pipe to gain popularity for its new executives.
Frm the days to oshomole till 2day it remains a semi political party where they even fight over union elections.
A scam of pretence by a body to show it cares.
Mr peter esele has joined oshomole in official politics to contest edo 2016.

The majority of nigerians as reflected in 2015 election remain resolute, confident and sure of Pmb policies, sincerity intentions for nigeria, which brought him to power.
A mere protest for days on the street by a bunch of attention seekers is not an issue to any govt.

In my area at Udu LGA in Delta State we have steady light that we are even scared of what the next bill will look like. And as for the Prepaid Metre, some guys from BEDC came asking for those in need of pre-paid metre should come and register their name. But they all turn them down immediately they heard that they are to pay 25k to BEDC acct in the bank for the metre with a passport and mobilization fee.

The problem is 2 fold.

The DISCOS are undercapitlised, the result of a frsudulent privatisation process.

But tariffs will need to be increased in enable cover cost and make a profit. They will not invest if there are no returns on their investments.

But again, paying customers are carrying the sins of a large number of deadbeat users who either refuse to pay or steal power outright. The stolen power is placed on the heads of the righteous. This isn't fair.

omohayek:
As much as many of you may not like to hear it, the tariff increases are absolutely necessary if Nigeria is to ever enjoy reliable power generation. It costs money to import power-generating equipment and foreign expertise, it costs money to buy fuel, and it costs money to improve the power distribution infrastructure. The discos were already failing to cover their costs before the real value of the Naira started to weaken, which is why they couldn't reliably distribute even the meager 4,500MW that the gencos made available. Unless they can cover their costs and make a profit, why even bother staying in business?

Instead of the NLC complaining about the tariff increases, they'd be better off demanding for metered billing instead. No sensible person disputes that people should only be charged for the power they have actually received.
You are totally correct . When Dstv increased their rates, NLC didn't boycott that so I see no reason why they should do this because the electricity company is privately owned

There should be an increase indicated in service delivery, before the proposed new tariff,” he said.
Why the increase in tariff if there's no improvement in power supply. Infact it's worse now.
If power is stable then I will be glad to pay any amount if not then it's fraudulent.

Who says privatization is not working?

In a situation like this, whom do the masses run to?
The executive, the legislators, the judiciary or the organized labor unions,?.

These discos are milking Nigerians dry since the days of lord lugard, they said one thing and do the opposite,. They promised to scrap service charge and provide prepaid meters by last December, why cant the government sanction them for defaulting in many areas of the contractual agreements?. ......oh God save us from themooooooo

Mobilize which workers, i want to believe that by now workers should be wiser to know that when they call for showdown, they are using the masses as cash point from the government for themselves. Remember oil subsidy period, what happened? The huge house grant government gave to them is what they compromised with when government threatend them with paying back the money, the labour organisations immediately brought the showdown to an end. They are coming again talking tough for their pocket o. Lets be wise.
