The UN envoy for Syria declared on Monday the official commencement of the Syria peace negotiations which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland . The Syrian war has been a lingering crisis or war and has led to the gruesome death of more than 260,000 people.

Staffan de Mistura who is an Swedish - Italian diplomat noted that "talks are complicated and difficult ", but the Syria people deserve to see something concrete, apart from a long painful negotiation. He did not disclose the time frame for the first round of talks but expected a positive conclusion before February 11.

The talks are complicated because the group known as the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) are reluctant to commit to talks preferring to negotiate with President Bashar al-Assad. The group is demanding several things namely a stop in the bombardment of civilians by Russians, prisoners release and humanitarian aid to affected cities. The Syrian government has in turn agreed to send aid to Madaya and three other seriously affected towns but defaulted on the other condition .

The Syrian war has been on for almost five years, and has forcefully evacuated half of the Syrian population to migrate to neighbouring countries and Europe. This has also not just affected neighbouring countries like Turkey but also Europe and Russia. It is also known to be the main reason for the breakdown in diplomatic relations between Russia who support the al- Assad government and Turkey who are rooting for HNC. This has given a breeding environment for Islamic extremists who have claimed responsibility for several bombings in Damascus, Paris to mention but a few hence killing thousands. On the other hand, the forces of Assad are having the upper hand in recent time due to the military assistance of Moscow .

It is believed the HNC is backed by Washington and Western Europe as against the Russians. The war is seen not just a war to resolve the future of Syria but a war to determine the most powerful of external forces/world powers (U.S and Russia).
