7 Ways to Reduce Electricity Bill by 30% or more.

It's no news that the electricity providers have increased tariff. With the economy taking a hard toll on people you need to cut down your electricity bill. As a Facility Manager, I've been researching ways to cut costs on electricity bill for a while now and wanted to share some tips I’ve learned so you can save money on your electricity bill too.

1. Discuss with other people who share in your electricity usage (family and staff) on how to cut cost and stop wasting energy. It's a collective effort, you can't be around all day. So share these tips with them.

2. Turn off.
This is very important. 70% of energy waste comes from appliances. When you leave your TV on in the sitting room and you are in the room, that's a lot of waste. Leaving computers on while you are on break, is waste; Hibernate instead. This is a common practice with most people. Let's #Turnoff.

3. Unplug when not in use.
Like 'Turn Off', Unplug when not in use. Appliances use 15% energy when plugged in even if they are turned off. Don't leave appliances plugged in after work or when you go to bed. Make sure you Unplug completely.

4. Use LED bulbs not just energy saving.
We light up more than 60% of our homes and more than 80% of our offices. On the average, our houses has more than 15 bulbs, which consumes 20% or more of the electricity bill. Using LED bulbs (not just energy saving bulbs - see image below) further save more than 10%. So, be smart.

5. Use Fan or AirCoolers.
Some people actually think using AC is the only way to cool down the temperature. If you live in a storey building and you have no obstruction to your window, leave it open and enjoy the fresh air. Except the weather is really hot, don't use the AC. Alternatively, use AirCooler. AirCoolers use 4 times less energy what your AC uses and will achieve 80% result over time especially in the morning and evening when the weather is cooler. This will save you a lot on your next bill.

6. Use programmable Thermostat.
This works and will save you a lot. Like Fridges, Freezers and even AC Thermostat. A programmable Thermostat program your appliances to turn off and on whenever you want them to. This is very effective even when you are not home.

7. Use Water Heater Properly.
If you use water heater, don't leave them on all day. Even Hotels don't. It takes 25-35 minutes to reheat water from an electric water heater. So, turn on 30 minutes before going to the bathroom and turn off immediately you step out.
