The bible in Genesis 1:26 states, “Then God said, “Let Us make man in our image, according to our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So man was made in the image and likeness of God. But what is the image and likeness of God? The bible says in John 4:4 that, “God is spirit, and those that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” If God is spirit, and created man in his image, then surely, man is spirit too. Man is spirit with soul living in a body. The bible confirms this in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your entire spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
If man is spirit, then what of angels? And of the angels he said, who makes his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire (Hebrews 1:7). So angels are spirits too. In fact, it was these angels the Almighty was referring to in Genesis 1:26 when He said “let us…” because the angels who were created before man were also in the image of God (spirits).
In Deuteronomy 8 verse 3, the bibles states, “And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” The Lord Jesus Christ when was tempted in the wilderness with food quoted this in Matthew 4:4, that “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.” These revelations point to the fact that, manna that God gave the Israelites in the wilderness was actually the word of God. Remember God fed the Israelites on their journey to Canaan in the wilderness (Exodus 16:35), and the psalmist by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote that, this manna was food for angels (Psalm 78:25). If manna is the food of angels according to the 78th Psalm, and this same manna is the word of God, then the food of angels who are spirits like man is the word of God. This means that, food for the spirit of man is actually God’s word.
Anytime we eat rice, wheat, maize and the rest, we are feeding our flesh. Galatians 5:17 states “for the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do”, therefore your flesh is constantly fighting you. Feeding your flesh daily and ignoring yourself (I mean your spirit man) will only energize the former to defeat the latter. As the bible speaks in Romans 8:6 that to be fleshly-minded is death but to be spiritually-minded is peace and life, denying your spirit of his food (THE WORD) will cause your death. It is expedient that a believer will tame his flesh by feasting on the word without ceasing, after all this flesh will not enter the kingdom (1 Corinthians 15:50). Let us strengthen the spirit. Let us eat of the word to conquer the flesh.
