Solomon, the suspected burglar, with his head trapped in the burglary proof at a shop in Jos
Luck ran out of a suspected burglar when his head was hooked up in a burglary proof during a dramatic operation in a laundry shop in Jos, capital of Plateau State.
He was however lucky to escape an extra judicial action, as a team of armed policemen saved him from the hands of an angry mob which was only waiting for him to be freed.
“It is an established fact that this young man tried to burgle a shop, but his head was hooked in the burglary proof where he remained there all through the night till morning when the shop owner discovered him there,” state police spokesman, DSP Emmanuel Abuh told Daily Trust, yesterday.
The incident happened Wednesday morning when the suspect, who gave his name only as Solomon, was found hooked in chambers of the burglary proof – his head trapped inside of the shop, and the rest of his body outside, eyewitnesses said.
He was there between 9pm of Tuesday, when he tried to break into the shop, to the morning of Wednesday when he was found trapped through the burglary proof at the door of Zebra Barbers and Laundry located at Plateau Club along CBN Road.
“My staffs resumed work by about 7:30am, to find this man trapped in the burglary proof. They raised alarm that attracted concerned persons to try and free him. I came myself to help, but we were unsuccessful to free him. We had to go round the town to look for a welder, who came with his instrument and sawed him out,” David Dum, the owner of the shop, told Daily Trust.
He told Daily Trust that the suspect was held up by the burglary proof, just metres away from a pile of clothes he was suspected to have attempted to steal.
“He entered through the ceiling, and found the way into the first section of the shop. He tried to enter the main shop through the burglary proof when his head got hooked up there,” Dum said.
An eyewitness said the suspect could not stand upright after he was freed, but added that a an angry mob that waited patiently for him to be released, refused to listen to appeals not to set fire on him and burn him.
“We tried to stop them, but the angry mob surged on, and wanted to burn him alive. It was while we pleaded that a team of policemen arrived there to save him,” the eyewitness said.
He also said the suspect claimed he was not at the shop for the burglary he was being accused of, but that he was attracted there by a flashlight, and tried to poke his head through to find out what was happening.
State police spokesman confirmed all of these, and said the team of policemen that rescued him from the hands of the angry mob took Solomon for detention where he is being investigated for prosecution.
