Location: Uyo, state capital of Akwa Ibom.

Capacity: 30,000

Akwa Ibom state, named after the Qua Iboe river and located in the coastal South-Southern part of the Nigeria houses the Akwa Ibom international stadium. The newly built stadium is a major landmark of sporting events in Nigeria.

Akwa Ibom international stadium is a multipurpose stadium that serves sporting events as well as center for diverse cultural, religious and social events. The construction of commenced in 2012 and was officially opened in November 2014. The ultra modern multipurpose sport complex with a 30,000 seater capacity was modeled after Allianz arena in Munich, Germany. The stadium spans through 48 hectares of land and it has some unique features such as the bulletproof VIP and VVIP sections, the collapsible seats, the two-digital scoreboards, the digital playback screens, the digital flood lights, and the thirty emergency exits.



Other facilities available are a box office, media facilities, floodlights, a 30,000 capacity covered main bowl, a standby power system, an eight-lane 400m standard track, helipad, two dressing rooms, an ambulance bay, warm up facility with a six-lane 400m track. The structure of the Akwa Ibom stadium is in two phases which comprises a 400 meter running track for athletic events, and is encompassed by by a white triangular-shaped outer covering that encircles the whole spectator stand. The East curves and stand contain an approximation of 22,500 seats. The Governors’ Lounge, which is located in the grand stand on level two, has a sitting capacity between 30 and 40 VVIPs. The Grand stands can accommodate approximately 7500 people including the VIPS and VVIPS. The Akwa Ibom stadium also has a six-lane track constructed explicitly for the traing of athletes.

The Akwa Ibom International Stadium is equipped with security cameras, metal detectors, emergency service units, a stand-by fire fighting system and a steel fencing for crowd control.
