I was in shock when the news broke
on the social media, and with
confirmation by fellow NIS recruits that
our induction programme has been
placed on suspension by the Service. Reality dawned on me when on August
24, August, 2015, the NIS boss in my
state command disseminated the
information that the ongoing three
months induction programme has been
suspended based on a circular sent from NIS headquarters Abuja, stating that
1,600 officers were recruited into the
service “illegally”. How could this be? The recruitment exercise was
advertised in March, 2015, by the
Presidential Committee to assist in the
Immigration Recruitment from the Office
of the Secretary to the Government of
the Federation, as a recent statistics states that about 60 per cent of youths in
the country are jobless.
Even as several youths who have jobs
still seek greener pasture elsewhere,
interested youths all over the federation
filled the application forms online and uploaded all the necessary documents. Applicants who met the stated
requirements were shortlisted for a
Computer-Based Aptitude Test. The test
was conducted by Dragnet, a firm that
specialises in handling recruitment tests
for reputable companies in Nigeria like Chevron, Oando and others in some
designated areas across the nation. I noticed that virtually every applicant
within the south-west home address did
their CBT at Chams City Plaza in Lagos,
between 20 and 24, April, 2015; those in
the north did theirs in Abuja, while Port
Harcourt was also a centre for the south-southerners. I got an e-mail from NIS that I passed
the CBT and that I have been shortlisted
for physical examination, document
verification and oral interview which is
designated to hold in my state command. I went as instructed by the service and I
was amazed that a recruitment exercise
could be this free and fair at the federal
level. The NIS recruitment officials
measured my height and chest, checked
my knees, examined my ability to hear and see clearly. Series of questions
were asked by the officials based on
what I studied in school, and also series
of verification were carried out on all
my certificates presented that very day. To my surprise, I received an invitation
to obtain provisional appointment letter
and undergo preliminary documentation
at the Nigeria Immigration Training
School, Orlu, Imo State (NITSOL), while
others went to Nigeria Immigration Training School, Kano (Assistant
Superintendent 2) and Immigration
Training School, Ahoada, Rivers State
(Immigration Assistant 3). I, immediately called some of my
friends that we applied together but it
was painful that I was the only fortunate
applicant shortlisted of the twelve of us
that applied together. It wasn’t easy gathering money,
travelling to Imo state especially during
the fuel scarcity crisis in the country.
The process in the centre was another
hectic screening exercise on its own, as
it took over to a week to pass through the various stages of document
verification and further certification of
candidates’ eligibility. Surprisingly, the ASI 2’s were only
issued with posting order to the NIS
command in their different states of
origin without being giving appointment
letters like the IA3 and AII’s. The posting order read thus, “…I am
directed to inform you that the above
named newly recruited personnel has
been posted to your command for
attachment and induction with
immediate effect, pending when they will be sent for training. The letter of
appointment will be sent in due course.
Please acknowledge receipt and date the
newly recruited staff reports for
duty.” However, the reason ASI 2’s were not
issued their appointment letters
wasn’t made known. The induction programme started on the
June 1, 2015, which comprises rigorous
activities such early morning jogging,
always beginning by 6.am, parade and
drills, fatigue, among others. Aside this,
we were also introduced to the following courses: Immigration Act and
Manual, Weapon Handling and Police
Duties, Border Patrol, ECOWAS and
African Affairs, Document Fraud,
Passport and other travel documents,
CERPAC/VISA/QUOTA, as well as Anti- Human Trafficking and Child Labour,
among other. We have all been specially trained in the
rudiments of these courses in the last
three months so as to carry out our
duties effectively.
Most of the recruits have resigned from
different places of work, rented an apartment, some have even borrowed
money so as to survive, pending the
time we start getting salary. Some spent
heavily on transportation, feeding,
buying of induction materials (white socks, white vest, white shorts, white tennis e.t.c). Our passing out parade has been
scheduled to come up on September 1,
2015 of which in preparation, we have
been parading under the sun and in the
rain, drills from the instructors and so
on. We have gotten our accoutrements and preparing our minds towards that
glorious day when the heart breaking
circular came that after three months
spent with rigorous exercises during the
induction, we were placed on
suspension.

Two times I can remember.

1st time - This happened in 95/96. I was on my way to my sixth form college but decided to go see my friend in the hood. He was an up and coming guy man and I wanted to see if he had any new 090 fire lines. I alighted from the bus and as I walked towards his house, I saw 2 chaps playing table tennis.

As I walked past the players, one of them called out to me; egbon shey ele ba wa count scores (can you help keep scores). I was in no hurry and enjoyed watching table tennis so I obliged.

The game carried on and one of them was so terrible it was embarrasing. Game ended something like park-2. The really rubbish player brought out a wad of cash and gave it to the chap who won. The winner was the same one that called out to me.

I made to leave but the winner called out to me and walked alongside with me. He told me (in yoruba) that the other chap was an ibo boy who had stolen thousands from his dad and was gambling it all away. He advised that I bet on a game with him and I was sure to double my money.

Even though I was a below average player, having seen how rubbish the ibo boy was, I didnt hesitate. We walked back to the tennis board. The yoruba boy suggested I give the ibo boy 15 ahead to entice him. I agreed cause the ibo boy was really rubbish. I laid allthe money I had on me. I think it was N50 but cant be sure. What I can remember was that it was just enough to take me to school and back.

I started the game with the 1st of my 5 serves. The previously rubbish ibo boy returnes it with a back handed smash, 0-16 shocked. I was shook but I thought to myself, ah a fluke return. 2nd service, same thing, 3rd service, fore hand smash from the ibo boy, 0-18.

cry My eyes turned red as It started to dawn on me that I had been scammed. I dropped my bat, turned to my fellow yoruba boy who I believed to be my ally and said I wasnt playing again. He shook his head and with respect he replied 'ah, egbon eti bet' (You cant go back on a bet after the game has started)

I picked up my bat and tried to salvage the situation with 2 iká services but the ibo boy was so good he won the points, 0-20 cantab! The boy then finished me off with 2 robó agbeti services.

I left the table in shame and walked to my friends house a short distance away. I knocked on the gate for minutes but there was no response. My day just became worse. I had no money and there was no way I could make it to school. Tears started to roll down my eyes as I began my 4km walk back home.

It shld b 8 yes ago. I wanted to buy phone @ computer village & I have 13k with me. As I was checking from one phone seller to another I hear one bro for my back saying "bros yeh, u wan buy phone?Come buy this music express phone na, very cheap & affordable with perfect functionality" Na so I carry my leg go meet d guy o.
I checked through d phone & it was working fine, I dialed some numbers & spoke with two to three people & it was awesome. I stylishly asked d guy what d fault of d phone is & he said no issues at all & that he needs money to buy another phone.
I priced d phone & he said 8k, I was like sho but as I sharp guy( I think I was ) I told him I can only pay 6.5k & at last he agreed. I remembered I have been scammed one time like that at oshodi where I bought a phone for 3.5k only for d guy to hand over a scrap to me & also called some guys to give me sweet slap to say d least so remembering that scenerio, I acted smartly this time(I think say I wise). I told d guy that I will hand over d cash to him after he hands over d phone to me on d bike & d bike will take off to avoid a recurrence of what I experienced at oshodi. He agreed & we called a random bike man.I climbed d bike, he gave me the phone & I gave him d money & zoom I instructed d bike man. After some distance, I looked back & I saw d guy smiling so I smiled back & also waved him with my 32 teeths widely opened.Immediately I got to d bus stop at Ikeja under bridge, I entered sango bus direct & I was happy I now have a gd phone for just 6.5k. All this while I did not check d phone I was holding not until I got to iyana ipaja where I feel it is safe to check d phone.
I press d end call button but no light showed up so I was thinking it must have been switched off by d guy. So as I pressed switched on button, I noticed one white object popping out & I was like what is this? I smelled it cos it stained my hand & I found out that it is fufu. I opened d phone & saw how fufu was packaged as phone for me. The man for my side just dey look me dey laugh. I no fit talk self, I just jejely put am for my pocket dey go house. My own scamming experience ...I'm not even sure what to call it.

One day, I entered a bus, I was coming back from the bank. I sat in the front with a guy, the bus fare was only about #50, and the man offered to pay for me. I said thank you and we gisted. He seemed like a nice guy!

He came down in the bus stop before mine own, there's an eatery opposite the bus stop, He asked if I wanted to come to the eatery and chat with him. I said ok.

When we got in there, he wanted to order for me, but I refused, wasn't really hungry, so we just sat and started talking.

He told me that he just got back from the visa office, he got his visa and would be travelling out soon. He said his parents told him to marry before he leaves. He said he would like me to marry him.

I said , I wasn't interested, I was not looking to marry and we just met. So I got up to leave.

He grabbed my purse from my hand ooh and started begging me to marry him, there was money in my purse ( not a lot, less than #500). I said give me my purse I want to leave.

He refused oooh, saying I must agree to marry him and introduce him to my parents right now. He started screaming, saying I must marry him.

People were just looking, Shame started catching me. The more I was demanding for my purse, the more he was shouting that I must marry him ooh.

I decided to walk down and call the Okada men to come ooh, it was my area and I knew some of them.

I came back with one Okada man but the man had disappeared.

The money in the purse wasn't too much and there was nothing else in it. The purse was really old and worn out.

So i did not lose much, but this was the most confusing event in my life.

The okada men said it was a scammer.

I was scammed by these networking group and these online investment sites like Startupinsider dot Biz and Tfinvestments dot biz. In this last one, you deposit and your money will grow. You will withdraw and they will accept your withdrawal and then record it as paid whereas nothing enters your account. Another one is fantastic money dot com. Investors beware of these sites.

On this faithful day, solomon eleghe came to my office to see his friend, he introduce an job offer (FAAN) to her, and side within 6hours she should try and get the sum of 150k for the guy who will process it.
My colleague could not raise the cash, and she turned to me, and ask if i was interested?
i said YES, BUT I ASKED WHY 150K?(because THE MONEY WAS SMALL) solomon replied and said the man is a dirctor in presidency, that he didnt really need our money, but is a form of saying thank you.

At this point i tried assesing him......he his driving a toyota jeep, vrey clean man, and talks like someone that as the fear of GOD.
My colleague told me they ve been friend for so many years, so i felt like am in aself hand.

to cut everything short........solomon ran aways with my money, till now am still looking for him. he threw away the fifteen years friendship because of 150k.
i traced him to his chuch in CHRIST EMBASSY @ kubwa, only to find out that he had also defraud the unit head of his home cell the sum of 700,000k.

At this juncture i knew i can never get my money back.
