Nigerians, Its Time To Revert Back To The Old Colonial Political Structure by skydeexie(m): 1:52pm On Feb 16, 2016
I really get pissed off whenever or for whatever reason Nigerians, the electronics and print media still refer to parts of Nigeria as South-West, North-North, South-South, Middle Belt, West West, East West, North East, Core North, North Central, ad-infinitum. 56 years after independence and 49 years after creation of States in the Nigerian Federation, we still see ourselves not as Nigerians but as coming from particular geo-political or geographical regions. What has happened to the States constitutionally created to do away with all this divisive, ethnic and religious approach to national issues. The old colonial politics of yesteryears is still with us and very much alive. Can Nigeria ever become a nation in the true sense of the word like United States of America, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, etc?

Therein lies our bane and reason(s) why Nigeria cannot progressively move forward. This is exactly what brought about the demise of the so-called first republic. Apart from helping to bring a quick end to the Nigerian civil war (1966-1970) and to give Nigerians a true sense of belonging to the nation, I kept wondering why were states created in the first place. On national and local issues being discussed, hardly a day passes without one hearing reference being made to geo-political or geographic regions of the country. Can we really adjust our prisms by which we see or tackle pressing national problems.

I make bold to say, if the present states structure as constitutionally enshrined in our statute books is seen nonoperational, not development friendly and complete alienation of the people at the grassroot, then let us revert back to either the old colonial structure which then was (Northern, Eastern, Western and Mid-West Nigeria respectively), or let the Federal government dismantle the states and deal directly with the Local government councils and make the legislative duties of the National Assembly part time engagement. Nigeria is at a cross-road economically, politically and socially. The present political structure is unwieldy, expensive and non-productive at best. Reverting back to the old setup makes a lot of good sense unless there is a better solution.
God help us!
