Testament to Nigeria's overbloated civil service. What do we call this, Timesharing or what?

Nasarawa local government council of Nasarawa state has 30 drivers on its payroll even as the only functional car in the council is the official car of the local government chairman.

The commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Alhaji Ahmed Tijjani, stated this in Lafia while reacting to the refusal of labour to make necessary concessions in spirited efforts to end the ongoing strike by workers in the state.

Alhaji Tijjani, who was the chairman of the same local government before his appointment as commissioner called on labour to be considerate in their demands and make all necessary concessions in the spirit if collective bargaining that would see an end to the industrial faceoff.

He lamented that the workforce at the local government level was over bloated making it impossible for government to readily meet its obligation to workers, especially with the recent fall in revenue allocation.

The commissioner, expressed concern over why labour demanded the suspension of biometric screening of workers in the state which was being carried out in good faith in order to fish out ghost workers and check revenue leakages.

In another development,, while workers in the state eagerly awaited the imminent suspension of the strike action, the Nasarawa State government, on Monday, filed a suit before Industrial Court in Makurdi, Benue state, challenging the legality of the strike action on the grounds that due process were not followed as prescribed by relevant labour laws.

This is what we call division of labour. Zero stress at work. You go to work one day a month and get paid for thirty days.

Even the one vehicle may not be functional.

This is ... If you look at this well, this seems like the handiwork of the top civil servants who add fictitious names to the ministry so they can take the salaries.

I remembered when I was serving in the North, you will only notice activities in all the Local government councils moment the monthly allocation is in the state and after it is shared, no more soul in the council until next month. We call them "ministry of ba aiki" (ministry of no work)

Really shameful stuff. The reality is that all these comments will vanish into thin air when oil boom starts again. The bloating and ghost workers scandal will cease being a topic of national discourse. Replacing it will be calls for increased minimum wage and salaries of everyone from teachers to health workers.

It is a vicious cycle, I have come to accept as reality.

The kind of Labour Union we have in Nigeria not considerate in any way. Thats why you see them on the street protesting without not any cause. Issues Senate should be handling are these and not personal attacks on the President. 30 Drivers to one vehicle angry

The Commissioner is as stupid as stupid is. While he was Chairman in the same Local Govt, what did he do about it. Maybe he is even the one that got most of them the job.
