UI GETS FOREIGN SUPPORT TO LAUNH NEW COURSE ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The University of Ibadan (UI) has won a foreign grant of about $900,000 approximately N108 million as one of the 10 Universities Worldwide to host a new Master’s degree programme in Development Practice designed to promote sustainable development.
The U.S based MacArthur Foundation which recently announced the awards of nearly eight million U. S. dollars, approximately N960 million to address challenges of global sustainable development, selected the UI as the only Nigerian University and one out of three from the African continent.
In a release issued by the University and signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (academic), Prof. Adigun Agbaje and the Dean of Post Graduate School, Prof. Labode Popoola, the University explained that the MacArthur Foundation had approved money for the immediate take-off of the Master’s in Development Practice (MDP) programme that will provide broad-based postgraduate training for a new generation of development experts over the next three years.
According to the release, “as envisaged, the MDP programe at UI, about which the National Universities commission (NUC) has been notified, will provide an avenue for advanced interdisciplinary training and education in sustainable development practice for sub-saharan Africa”.
“It will involve an integrated and multi-disciplinary approach to sustainable development that incorporates local knowledge as it is designed to provide gradate students with training beyond the typical focus on classroom study of economics and management found in most development studies” the release added.
The University further stated that it would build on existing postgraduate programmes in health, science, management and natural resources in the MDP programme and serve as programe hub for English-speaking West African nations.
In his reaction, the UI Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro who expressed appreciation to the Foundation noted that the MacArthur had contributed greatly to the on-going transformation of the University towards achieving its vision as a research institution with commanding presence.
Prof. Bamiro recalled that more than 70 Universities in North America, Africa, Europe, Asia Australia and Latin America submitted proposals out of which only 10 were chosen UI.
He specifically thanked the president of the Foundation, Dr. Jonathan Fanton for the interest in Nigeria and UI, saying “We shall forever be grateful to him for assisting UI”.
Other benefiting institutions include Columbia University New York, Emory University Atlanta, Georgia, The Energy Resources Institute University, New Delhi, India and James Cook University. They also include Trinity College Dublin, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, University of Cheikh. Anta drop, Senegal, University of Botswana and University of Florida.
