WHAT IS BATTERY CAGE
ADVANTAGES&DISADVANTAGES OF BATTERY CAGE.
Battery cage is a battery-like box made with wire welded mesh,divide into 2,3,4,5 cells.they often comes in units,and in different tiers,based on design &type.
Battery cages could be use to rear birds;layers,broliers,quail, pigeon,rabbits,grass cutters,etc.
The battery cage use for keeping layers, broiler,are often reffer to as POULTRY CAGES.
POULTRY CAGES are made with different quality of wire mesh,such as electro galvanize (cold galvanize) & hot galvanize.These materials differs basically in durability,but will serve same purpose,a quality electro galvanize mesh can last for at least 7-10years,while a quality hot dip galvanize mesh can last for about 15-20years.
POULTRY CAGES comes with several features such as feeding trough,nipple drinker, frames,etc.
Poultry cages are in various type&designs,the most common one is the A-type cage,A type cages are always in 2tiers,3tiers&4tiers.we also have the H-type cage,they are always in 3,4,5,6,7,8,10+tiers respectively, they are often reffered to as automatic cage,due to the fact that they have additional features such as hopper,coveyor belt,feed silo,waste elevator,etc which aid easy usage.
ADVANTAGES OF BATTERY CAGE/POULTRY CAGE.
(1)ACCOUNTABILITY:battery cage makes counting of birds easy,as it is calculated according to the number of birds in a cell &per cage unit,it makes a farmer to know those birds that are performing well,it let's the farmer know the quantity of feed&water consumed per hour& day. As this info can be used as a tool to make proposals/cost of production/ expenditure per week/season.
(2)SPACE MANAGEMENT:Battery cages helps to utilize and manage space in poultry,as they comes in tiers,e.g 2tiers,3tiers,4tiers,etc...they contain more birds compare to deep liter/free range system;where birds are being put on the ground&crowded.
(3)HYGIENIC PRODUCTS: poultry products such as eggs& chicken acquired from battery cage are always neat&hygienic ,cause they have no direct contact with waste(liter/shit).
(4)LESS LABOUR:battery cage minimize human power/reduce labour in the sense that feeding of birds is easy and convenient.
Battery cages comes with feeding trough, and some also have feeding trolleys attached to it(full automatic cages system),they also have automatic water system line that runs day&night,&regulate itself,which makes drinking easy for birds& reduces farmers stress&time.
Some cages also comes with manure removal system e.g scrapper&conveyor belts,which coveys faeces of birds immediately they are dropped,& transfer it outside to a dumping truck/waste pit.and these makes poultry work fun and interesting.
They kind of system(battery cage) also makes vaccination &infection treatment very easy&convenient, reducing physical,emotional&mental stress of farmer.
(5)HEALTHY BIRDS: This is the main advantage of battery cage,and this factor determines farmer's profit& happiness.
Birds in cage then to be healthy cause they have no direct contact with their feaces:if birds have direct contact with faeces, they will be exposed to manure borne diseases,and this according to experts is a great harm.
In a deep liter system,wood shaven is being used as bed;absorbing moist content of chicken manure,when these happens ,the wood shaven reacts with the liter:decomposes,and a gas called AMMONIA is evolved,which is hazardous to birds... In a battery cage, this is not,cause liter/waste are being packed manually within 2-3 days,or immediately with manure removal system,making fresh cool air to flow beneath the cage.
(6)GOOD PERFORMANCE: When birds are healthy,and in moderate shape& weight,they lay well;production increases,and farmers makes reasonable profit on a long run,due to the fact that less money is been spent on drugs/injections.
DISADVANTAGES OF BATTERY CAGE
(1)manure pit/gutter becomes breeding place for flies.
(2)birds stay in one place through out their productivity life time and this may cause paralysis.

Disadvantage (1) can be controlled by regular packing of liters
Disadvantage (2) can be minimize by increase in calcium in feed.
