Lasu External Systems In Final Exit - Lessons Learned by Nobody: 6:05pm On Feb 22, 2016
The director of the LASU External System is Professor Tajudeen O. F. ABANIKONNDA. There are at least 8 Assistant Directors.
I have decided to write this post in two parts. I will like to see LASUES student's reacting before going ahead to talk about certificates rackets and the question of who is a student.

Watching from the sidelines (at the Agege Campus of the Lagos State University External Systems) one can only conclude that it is indeed the best decision for the Fashola administration in conjunction with NUC and the LASU-admin to bring the external system program to an end this year.
Major highlights of the system as it is going to an end are as follows:

Lectures:
The school administration as well as the students by their words and actions agrees that lectures and coursework are useless and of no consequence. The lecturers/resource-persons who come to class to give lectures usually find that only five or nine students come to class - in a class of over 120 students.
It's worse if the lecturer is a staff of LASU as he or she may likely not show up at all throughout the semester, usually such ones only collect their honorarium of N40,000 per subject at the end of one year.
The attitude of the students was the fall out of the decision from 2009 on-wards by the external system to shut out lectures from the grading and monitoring of the students progress. It was thought that such will ensure that students do not give any bribe to their teachers.
Hence students don't come to class for lectures and some don't know the courses they are to write until the very day of the examination.
The course forms containing their subject are never signed by the lectures as the authorities do not involve the lecturers in the signing of the course forms.

Examination
LASU now examines through 70 or 50 Objective Questions. Usually, the authorities justify this by comparing with other international universities who use objective questions for some of their grading system. It also refer to its effectiveness and efficiency in comparison to weaknesses found in the system prior to the adoption of objective testing
No class assessment is used in LASUES. The Exams are supposed to be 70%. Students do not know how the authorities arrive at the other 30% that should make up their total scores. It is usually never released. Not one student in Agege campus has any test score for me to see. I interviewed 4 HOCs and 31 extra year students. In fact 3 semesters ago, a campus warned lecturers not to conduct any class assessment or class test.

Conduct of examinations
Many Head of Class HOCs have already perfected a way of getting the answers of the OBJ examinations before the exams or during the conduct of the examinations. The students are therefore usually not interested in the lectures or in class attendance: they only want to do do the semester exams and get the answers to the 70 questions!
Hence to pass these OBJ exams you have to network with either the HOCs or the "man-in-charge" of releasing the results. Although this is a really coded operation.
There are only a few decent invigilators during examination. Majority of the invigilators are easily outwitted by students, or cajoled by campus staff (whether agege or Anthony or Yaba). Some campus staff who are not authorized to go the examination halls often leave their offices to go fulfill their personal interests in the examinations hall.
Conduct of the OBJ examination is largely a JOKE. If these student graduate from school without tasting written examinations, I doubt if they can compare with the previous LASU external system graduates.

Other issues in part II are:
Denials by the authorities
inconsistencies in the release of the results by the the Dr. In charge of the results
the naivety of the students themselves as well as the
legislators half hearted interventions
