Under Obasanjo's regime, when Al Mustafa was being detained, northerners protested. People protest when they feel an injustice. A northerner is in power now so the average northerner feels a sense of ownership of the government. So you don't expect them to be very much involved in protests.
If Jonathan had won I'm sure you would have seen a lot of protests against detention of prominent northerners, especially if their rights are being violated as is common now with Buhari regime. I'm sure you are aware of how violence was ramped up under Jonathan. We are still dealing with devastating result (Boko haram) today.
Nigerian governments should always follow due process and respect fundamental rights of Nigerians or else there will always be protests.
