About 87 parents have so far been apprehended by officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for carrying under -aged children in the front seats of their vehicle.

This was disclaosed by the FRSC FCT Sector Commander, Nseobong Akpabio, who said the parents were arrested within the past three weeks.

He said those arrested claimed that their children will cry if they are kept on the back seats, adding that their reasons are unacceptable.

Akpabio warned that no parent should drive with his child on the front seat or on his laps.

He said the Commission has embarked on road searches tagged ‘Operation Sanity’, which involves identifying and punishing parents driving with children on their front seat.

“This is not an acceptable excuse for any reasonable parent or guardian to offer in the face of glaring violations which has 95% possibility of leading to death and we are going to prosecute parents’ violators to serve as deterrents to others,” he added.

Akpabio informed that vehicles not properly parked or abandoned on the road will be removed and impounded by the omission, stating that in the last two months over 271 abandoned vehicles of various categories were removed from the roads.

He said from the month of May till date, 491 people were arrested and arraigned for 620 traffic offences, of which 463 were convicted by a mobile court presided over by Magistrate Emmanuel Iyana.

The sector commander disclosed that Alcolizer machine is being used by the FRSC officials to determine the alcohol level in the blood of drivers.

“One Raphael Oko found driving under the influence of alcohol has been jailed for three weeks and must undergo psychiatric test in a government hospital as well as present the result to the court before undergoing a driving safety enlightenment programme at FRSC (FCT) Command.

If he is cleared by the FRSC, he will then pay N57,000 fine before the final clearance by the court is giving,” Akpabio said.

I am of the opinion that what these people are doing is perfectly in order. We need to be mindful of our lives. I thumb up for them, they should keep it up since it is for our own benefits.

I know that as at early 1990s , carrying children ( whether front/back) without special car strap seat attracted a fine of DM600 (german marks) in Germany.
That was about equivalent of N30k in naira then then

Now i can see the FRSC working.
besides airbags in the front seats are likely to suffocate children below 12 yrs in the event of an accident,
Nigerians have a crazy belief that except you are traveling you do not need to take safety measures whereas accidents occurs anywhere/anytime,
Safety first or regret first

I do not entirely agree with you.

There is something called self development.

A lot of the offenders are actually people who travel abroad. They JUST DO NOT WANT TO DO THE RIGHT THING.
No one needs to be told the danger of riding with a child in your front seat.

Also remember that there is a NOTICE ON YOU SUNVISOR IN THE CAR STATING THIS FACT.

If a large percentage of them are travellers who arent around most of the time. . . how does that amount to a LARGE population percentage of the Nigeria road drivers?
angry

Moreso. . .presently we've got lesser newer cars with info on sunvisor than the older tokunbo cars with no notice anywhere on the car plyin the road

like i did say previously. . . it's an ideal step & encoragin 2 say d least, but d Nigerian drivers need 2 b xtensivly educated. Are the authorities doin this 2 generate revenue from fines or what? Nigeria's a dynamic environment where things don't work for unxplainable reasons
