The U-turn On The #5,000 Stipend Payment: A Nigerian Youth Writes. by theseekeroftrut: 12:10am On Mar 07, 2016
Amidst tension, the uncertainty of an incumbent conceding defeat, fear of post election violence, Nigerians came out en-mass to vote on the 28 of march 2015. People's vote counted, an incumbent president was defeated, he graciously conceded defeat and history was made. Interesting, right?
Taking a critical look at all the events that led to this historic day,the vigorous campaigns, the press conferences,radio/tv jingles, social media sensitization/enlightenment and so on, one would unarguably resolve that the youths took the front seat in all of this. To state the fact, the youths won this for President Buhari and his party, we won this for the promised change, for our future and those yet unborn, majority were convinced that all campaign promises would be taken into consideration and treated with utmost seriousness and sincerity largely because of the person of President Buhari who was highly reputed for being disciplined and of high moral standards, but in the light of recent events, one would wonder If we were deceived or just being taken for granted.
President Buhari and his party made a promise of #5, 000 monthly stipend to the unemployed Nigerian graduates, only for this to be reversed without a formal and proper explanation to those whom the promise was made to. Then, we had to wait till the president traveled out of the shores of this country to hear of his stance on the issue. since returning to Nigeria he hasn't seen reasons to further elaborate on it, does that mean the issue is closed? that our opinions and feelings in this doesn't matter? Do we need to remind someone that this is a democratic regime and as such, the people are supreme.
One thought that lingers in my mind is the reason why Mr president didn't make his stand known to the youths on this issue prior to the presidential election, could he have been silent because he needed to explore all means necessary to get the votes of the electorate? even if that entails lying to millions of Nigerian youths who undauntedly worked to ensure his success at the polls?
Nigerians are quite informed about the current economic challenges being faced by this government,we know alot needs to be put in place if this country will ever return to the good old days and we also understand that with current economic challenges, the payment of #5, 000 stipend to the unemployed youths may not be feasible but the way and manner this was conveyed to Nigerians is totally disrespectful and apathetic unlike their approach while they were canvassing for our support.
I would advise Mr president and the APC to quickly take a trip down memory lane and reminisce on what led to the decapitation of the then ruling party, what incensed numerous Nigerians to turn their backs on them and to swiftly retrace their steps back,to the change Nigerians voted for before it becomes too late.
However, if the current path towed by the APC is not reversed it could spell doom for the ruling party in the coming elections, only time will tell but one thing i can confidently say is this; no Nigerian wants to be taken for granted anymore, not after we've demonstrated how powerful we are as a people by unseating an incumbent president.
My final word of advice for Mr president on this matter would be to re- address the issue in a fatherly manner, stating reasons why it is impracticable for now and why he thinks the idea might at this moment truncate the change ideology, then implore the youths for their understanding. We are the bedrock of this nation and it's future and as such, we deserve to be treated better. The fear of the youths is the beginning of wisdom, disregarding them could be precarious. God Bless Nigeria.

This is the problem with the average APC youth - they are too blinded by sentiment and silly hatred for GEJ. when some of us took time to work out a few calculations before the elections to prove to Nigerians that it is impossible for any of those APC "populist" promises to be delivered based on Nigeria's available resources, the blind Buhari supporters were too blinded by unreasonable hate to listen to us. all they wanted was "change", without thinking of what kind of change it was. Now, they have put us Nigeria in one chance bus. They better keep calm and enjoy the "change" they voted for!
