You may ask what is a good domain name. A good domain name has more than one factor that makes it a great domain name. In all a good domain name must present real worth financially and one factor describing this factor is the popularity of the domain name. Over the years we have seen domain names like sex.com sell for a whooping $13million and vacationrentals.com which sold for $35million. Looking at the above domain names you will notice that the latter has 15 characters which many domain flipping experts will consider as a bad domain name based on being too lengthy while the latter has only 3 characters but sold for lesser price. A great domain name is not determined by how long or how short it is,but by it level of relevance to internet users across the globe or in a certain geographical area.

Before you choose a domain name their are some important factors you should consider as well making sure that the domain name relates to your niche or intending brand you building. The popularity of a domain name is tied to the keyword term popularly searched on search engines. Which means you will need to use keyword tools in other to get a good domain name.

Here are some tips that will guild you to choosing a great domain name.

Step#1 - Choose Your Five Target Keywords

The first strategic step to take in choosing a good domain name is to use keyword research tools like Google keyword planner or any other keyword tool to come up with four to five target keywords that relates to your choice brand or niche. Then research for long tail keywords emanating from this target keywords. You can then add suffixes and prefixes to customise it to suit your brand. Looking at a keyword like "Gadget" you will notice that most of the TLDs have been registered, the option you should consider is to choose a long tail keyword. The keyword "Gadget" could have other related long tail keywords like "gadget hack, gadget latest, gadget geek, gadget bay, gadget hub" you can then select one of this long tail keywords which will make a perfect domain name. Its more preferable you choose .com domains as they are easier to remember and more popular than any other TLDs, but in cases where the .com of a high value long tail keyword like the ones mentioned above is unavailable, use the .net instead. You should understand that all domains have what they represent, like the .com is for companies , .net for computer and tech related niches, .org for non.profit organization. The. three major TLds .com, .net and .org can still be used for order services other than their intended uses as they are very popular and easily customisable.

Step#2 - Make It Memorable

Another factor you should consider while choosing your domain name is that you should make it easier for your audience to remember. A domain name that is easier to remember will make it easier for people to broadcast your domain name through referral , word of mouth and otherwise. Moreover it will also increase direct traffic to your website as your target audience will be able to remember your website URL and visit directly instead of using search engines. A website URL with hyphens, number, dash and other special characters can make your website URL hard to remember and generally they are not quiet good for SEO. e.g , www.millerblog-2015.com is quiet easy to remember but not SEO friendly.

Step#3 - Make It Easier To Spell

A good domain name should be easy to spell. While choosing your domain name ensure that its easy to spell. A domain name that is hard to spell can reduce your targeted website traffic drastically. e.g, the popular www.fiverr.com is a very difficult domain to spell, you should imagine the number of visitors both new and old who type in www.fiver.com in their web browser instead of www.fiverr.com . If there is a competitor with the URL www.fiver.com ,most direct traffic would be diverted to this URL as its easier for new and returning visitors to remember.

Step#4 - Make It Short

The shorter your domain name the better, though some domain flipping experts fill its not a major deciding factor for a good domain name. Your domain name should not be more than 17 characters and at worse cases it should be 21 characters long. E.g, www.millenniumadvertisingmanager.com based on length is not a good domain name. The most expensive domains names are within this bracket. You will also notice that some of the most expensive domain names are those with two-seven characters. Doing a research on domain names, you will find out that most two-three characters have been registered. Visiting some of the domain marketplace like, Sedo ,Flippa and Godaddy ,you will also notice that the 2-3 characters long domains are more expensive.

Step#5 - It Should Correspond To Your Brand Name And Target Audience Interests.

Your domain name should relate in someway to your brand. You could actually build a new brand from a domain which is unrelated to your business, but the domain name should be easy to brand to relate to the service you offer. Preferably a domain name that represents your business is easier to brand. For search engines, the first word in your domain name describes what your website stands for. Your targeted audience will also be able to remember your website URL simply by remembering what service or product you offer.Your domain name should relate to internet users search interest. In most cases, the main keyword that receives high volume of searches is unavailable, you can create a domain name from Long tail keywords relating to the main keyword.
