This is highly commendable and should be encouraged. Other state governors from the eastern part of the Country should emulate this action of Gov. Rochas Okorocha to revive Igbo Language and replicate same in their respective states. Before now, I was worried that those in leadership positions in Igbo land were not doing anything to ensure the survival of Igbo Language.. Thank God, the Imo State Governor has taken the bold step. Rather than vilify him, we should commend him. People might have their differences but we need to do away with sentiments and appreciate somebody when he does something good, including your enemy so that the region and the country as whole will move forward. 3 Likes |

ELVISHOT: Men!....... This's the best news of all time I've read on Nairaland. Okorocha seems to me like someone who know something about education. Not only should Igbo language be made compulsory, but it should also dethrone English language as the language of instruction in schools. To do a thorough job he should put Igbo first before English. Then, over some few years the people of Imo state would be free from intellectual slavery. We felt attention should be paid to the reading of Igbo language, which is part of our culture. It is time for us to go back to our roots and be proud of our language,’’ he said. Someone should inform the governor that it is the language itself that is the culture!. Culture is just language expressing itself through a people. The way a people talk, the way a people sign-language, the way a people pronounce words, the way a people behave, e.t.c is all tied to language. If you destroy a people's language all these other traits would fall apart!. I've explained this in details on the link on my signature. In fact, culture is nothing but a single unit of an individual carrying traits natural to a given community. One Yoruba man or woman is one unit of Yoruba culture. One Igbo man or woman is one unit of Igbo culture. One Hausa man or woman is one unit of Hausa culture. One Zulu man or woman is one unit of Zulu culture, e.t.c. If you kill every Yoruba or Igbo or Hausa people, leaving one man and woman, the two of them would populate a new generation of the same culture!. Culture is condensed language!!. If you destroy a people's language you've destroyed all. |
