Now, more than ever, renewable energy is creating more opportunities for people across the globe and a rural community in Anambra state, Nigeria is about to get access to electricity following the completion of an electrification project funded by Nigeria’s Bank of Industry (BOI). The unveiling of the solar project took place in Onono-Anam community in Anambra state and was commissioned by the Executive Governor of the state, Willie Obiano.



Nigeria is presently rocked with controversies surrounding electricity tariffs for those connected to the national grid, Therefore the development is a welcome relief to the community as the 24KW mini-grid project will ensure every home in the community has access to solar power. The project was executed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Nigerians have commended the initiative even as the acting MD/CEO of the Bank of Industry, Waheed Olagunju has said the bank is dedicated to replicating this project in rural communities in Edo and Kaduna states.

They should also look into building biogas systems in communities, the people provide farm wastes to feed the digesters, they in return get biogas in gas bags at a very low cost that will take care of their cooking, eliminate dependence on firewood.

Onono is one of the most natural beauties on earth but has been neglected by previous administrations.

It is a penninsular that lies between Anambra river and the river Niger. It is directly facing the Cable Point at Asaba.

This place should otherwise be the Lekki of Anambra but unfortunately has been a remote fishing community occupied by the indigenes, and of course Ijaw fisher men for decades.

I must add that it was one of the fiercest battle fronts during the great civil war, many federal vandal soldiers and the soldiers of the People's Army of Biafra died at Onono.

I read a news on CNN mobile site where it was stated that india are selling solar-generated electricity at less than N20(using N320/$) per kilowatt-hour. I am forced to ask, if india has more sun than Nigeria?

The problem in Nigeria is maintenance culture. I doubt the sustainability of this project cos of our lack of maintenance.
