Today we awake to the news that our power generation has dropped to 1580MW. Just last week we were celebrating it's rise to 4800MW.
Do you know Nigeria has spent 2.7 Trillion Naira in the last 15 years on power? So What is the problem?
We are going about solving our power generation problem the wrong way.
Gas powered electricity generation stations IS NOT THE FUTURE of electricity generation! There must be constant supply of gas for these stations to function. They are serious contributors to global warming (everyone is complaining about the hot weather now) this is the hottest period in recorded history.

SECTORS OF ELECTRICITY GENERATION and SUPPLY
There are 3 major sectors
-GENERATION
-TRANSMISSION
-DISTRIBUTION

We are not doing well in any of these 3 but our major problems are with GENERATION and DISTRIBUTION

SOLUTION TO POWER GENERATION
1. utilize our renewable sources of energy

The UK completed a solar energy farm that would generate 48MW of electricity last year (2015) . Nigeria has more sunshine than the UK because we are a tropical country close to the earth's equator. We have open savanna lands up north that are perfect for such a project as this. What would it cost? Solar energy would cost between $2 million dollars to $4M dollars to generate 1 Mega Watt of electricity
Policies should be made to encourage individuals to sell electricity to the distribution companies.

It gets better. Wind energy is even cheaper and uses lesser space.
Nigeria has a shoreline of 853KM. Wind current remains strong over 1km inland (that is very conservative). So we have about 853Km sq of land. We can't use all thes land as there has to be beaches and other real estates on our shore line but let's assume we can dedicate just 20% of our shoreline to power generation.

I takes 60m sq to generate 1MW of electricity from wind energy

20% of our shoreline is 170600M sq of land

We can generate about 3000Mw from just 20% of our shorelines using wind energy.

No, fuel, no gas shortage, Free energy fro wind that blows everyday our shoreline + open country up north has the potential of generating All the electricity we ever need

Texas alone would is generating 5,000Mw of electricity just from wind and solar. This is more than what we are generating with all our hydro power dams and gas turbine stations combined!

It costs about $1.4million to generate 1Mw of wind energy. It would cost nigeria $7billion to generate additional 5,000 mega watts.
Looks much, but it is not. The telecoms companies we have in nigeria worth far more than this. MTN alone worths over $20billion.

A single investor can invest into this and generate an additional 5,000 mw of electricity.
Imagine having just 2 companies investing then our capacity can reach 10,000MW +4,800MW (14,800Mw) under 2 years!

Why are we behind in renewable energy?

1. Investors only invest where they know they would make profit. We have the market.
So that is not a problem.

2. Government should partner with these companies, meet with our billionaires we can also influence partnership with these power companies.

3. State governments should stop waiting for the federal government. State governors should begin to see Revenue potentials through taxes they earn from power companies that operate in them.

4. Policies should be made to encourage individuals who wish to generate renewable energy.
In the US you can get 30% of cthe cost paid by the government. And electricity credits are also given for electricity you generate as an individual and contribute to the main grid. The United Kingdom has over 700,000 homes generating 15% of its total power.

DISTRIBUTION
In layman's terms, the problem with distribution is primarily not having enough transformers. You have transformers that are over loaded. You have some areas that don't even have transformers. These should be one of the responsibilities of the local government councils. Get electicity to your people! Get the infrastructure ready and private investors would come in.

ABOVE ALL: we need leadership that is sincere and committed to solving this problem without any selfish interest. There are power companies willing to invest in countries like Nigeria were the market is present and supply is inadequate. We can generate more than enough if we make it conducive for investors to invest I power.
2.7 Trillion Naira and all we can boast of

There is no apparatus to start those nice ideas. Imagine Fashola wants to increase tarrif when there are no prepaid meters in 80% of homes yet. Our politicians on one hand want to buy the power sector and hit huge profits within a short time. Just few days back i was reading on CNN mobile how India was getting solar generated electricity at less than N20/KWh (@ N320/$). Nigeria has more sunlight than India and can't tap into it.

One of the problems I decided to be silent on. Prepaid meter is the only way to achieve true privatization. And our politicians buying chunks of our power sector that is another issue I will pretend not to know. We are just not sincere with anything in this country.

My brother you no lie jare.
They know what they are doing. But solving our problem is not rocket science. In fact a single power company can supply the whole if nigeria. How can we be generating 4,800mw maximum? As big as we are
