I attended a government secondary school and I can attest that most teachers are like that. We used to dread walking past certain staff rooms because those teachers are looking for the unlucky kid to send on countless errands. The home economics teachers were the worst,, they don't care if you miss classes while cleaning their kitchen and washing their pots and pans. I fell into their trap once around break time and couldn't go to class till last period. Afterwards I started taking the longer route to avoid them.

So many things are wrong with this country, I can't even begin to process how things got this bad

[size=16pt]
This is one the challenges faced by children in public schools. While the male teachers make you work on their farms the female ones make you work in their kitchen and what's more worst they make you feel its something morally crucial to your success in school.

In my school days both in Lagos (for sanitation on saturdays) and Kwara ( on school farm and gardens) we were taken through most farming procedures . We do not call it labour but agriculture. In the days of PMB in the eighties WAI school children (no drain duck then )were committed to sanitation on saturdays . We wait for a team from the military to inspect our level of cleanliness. The Yoruba use to say( Ise ki pa eniyan sugbon ise n pa'yan) ie hard work don't kill but laziness.

This is best n reasonable decision Fayose d town crier has ever taken since been in govt. Don't they have their own children? Perhaps prosecute them for child labour. Thumb up!

I am serving at a secondary school in Ekiti and I stopped going to school on Fridays because that day is the scheduled day for farm work for ss2. imagine students going to farm on Monday. sincerely that practice should be stopped. I had expected to meet very smart kids but I saw otherwise, something drastic need to be done to revamp the fallen educational standard in Ekiti.

The funny thing is that he himself did same when in primary and secondary school, except he doesn't school around the axis of South West. I did farm work for my teachers when in Primary school. It's not a new thing except for those born around late 90's and 2000.

See shameles parents. What has been since the existence or since the beginning of the world, when we all die before 2156 it will still be in existence. That is not what we call child labour. Please, parent Check Your Dictionaries. The Governor was given wrong information by those parents.

This is just publicity stint. Every male ekiti student or student from any of the Western States count it all joy to follow their teachers to his farm and work. It is only an offence if the students are forced.

Is only in Nigeria you will see a man/woman whooping someone's kid with all sorts of horsewhip and punishing kids with different types of punishments e.g riding bicycle, frog jump, levelling grass, touch your toes, hands down legs up on the wall, etc. Then one begins to wonder, what really happened to guiding and counselling a child?

I remember this incident where this Nigeria lady who got employed as a par time teacher here gave one of her pupil a heavy knock on the head just because the kid was distracting his fellow pupils in the classroom. I don't know, maybe she thought she was still in Nigeria. Well at the end of the day, the parents of the kid sued her and the school. The management were left with no other option than to drop her and pay for certain damages. If not for some people that intervene, the woman would have been sent to jail.

Why would a kid be distracting others in class? What happened to home training?

Camara Laye narrated in "The African Child" that the headmaster of his school was relieved of his job after authorities found out that he had engaged the services of students to help out his wives.
