manufacturing sector recorded an increase of
N289bn in its output from N8.68tn in 2014 to
N8.94tn at the end of December 2015, figures
obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics
have revealed.
According to the NBS, there are 13 activities in the
manufacturing sector made up of oil refining;
cement; food, beverages and tobacco; textile,
apparel and footwear; wood and wood products;
pulp and paper products; chemical and
pharmaceutical products.
Others are non-metallic products, plastic and
rubber products; electrical and electronic, basic
metal and iron and steel; motor vehicles and
assembly; and other manufacturing.
An analysis of the output for the manufacturing
sector showed that despite the harsh operating
environment, which had led to massive job losses
and closure of some industries, the sector
continued to show resilience.
Apart from oil refining and other manufacturing
activities, which recorded a decline of N137.79bn
and N3.39bn from N385.81bn and N434.49bn to
N248.02bn and N431.1bn respectively, other
activities in the sector experienced some level of
growth.
For instance, there was an increase of N145.32bn
in the cement industry from N604.61bn in 2014 to
N749.93bn, while the food, textile, wood and paper
products industries rose from N4.24tn, N1.81tn,
N238.5bn and N59.92bn to N4.29tn, N1.87tn,
N259.25bn and N66.09bn, respectively.
The pharmaceutical industry recorded N35.51bn
increase in output from N154.61bn to N190.12bn
while non-metallic products, plastics, electrical,
iron and steel, as well as motor vehicles also grew
from N259.28bn, N221.95b, N5.75b, N195.76bn
and N67.14bn to N315.59bn, N267.16bn,
N6.02bn, N207.3bn and N70.05bn in that order

Just like importing raw materials for local manufacture, there is nothing wrong in importing hybrid seedlings/grass/legumes for planting in Nigeria to boost animal production.

By the way, why do I sense a feeling both of you are sad about this supposedly good news?

There is nothing to be happy about it! You know why?

Cos the infrastructure for these manufacturers to source their local content has not been put in place! Our steel industry is dead! here are no glass smelting plants for those who produce local drinks to mold bottles etc. Why not ensure all these were in place before banning importation? Buhari just put the cart before the horse

It is an emergency situation and in emergencies, people improvise to survive. The manufacturers are improvising to survive and it is indeed a good thing.

Furthermore, Buhari did not put any cart before any horse, he isnt the one who didnt diversify our economy, he isnt the one who crashed global oil prices and he isnt the one who led Nigeria into its present economic woes where we are currently having a negative balance of trade. In view of the present circumstances, the restrictions on forex is an inevitable move aimed at saving Nigeria from an impending collapse due to the negative balance of trade. Go and read about what is happening to nations like Greece or Venezuela and you will not jump into the same boat with the mass of ignorant/prejudiced critics who think Buhari or the CBN are being silly or are being the villains by restricting the distribution of forex.

Common sense is kicking in finally. How did we let our lives depend on foreign things and these people ban our product or avoid it when we export. However, brave decision by this government the right one as well.

You've only read one story and already jumping for joy. You forget that it is common sense to do so. Nigerians don't have power. Does that mean they would live in darkness? The obvious thing to do is switch to candles and lanterns and if you are bouyant enough, gasoline generators. But, the fact that you have found alternatives in gasoline generators and or candles does not mean it is a good thing. Efficiency is reduced, quality is below par and often times more expensive than energy produced through turbines, solar and wind. No nation can survive or grow exponentially with these policies. The laws of supply and demand must hold sway.

It is unfortunate that Apc government like to play politics with everything, I pity those dancing for this fraud, Nigeria and Africa as a whole is import dependent, you cant build a country by chasing shadows as APC government is doing, Industrialization of country cant happen when a country is divided along ethnic lines and hatred for one another, 90% of product used in Nigeria will remain imported for the next 50 years in Nigeria, The world have few export dependent countries like Germany, US, China and Japan. For a country to grow, you must allow market forces to determine your currency value at the market, the current fixing of naira against dollar will back fire, NIGERIANS is already filling the pinch, high inflation, poverty, lack of proper health facilities, Africa must import Agricultural Tools, Industrial machineries, Drugs, Hospital equipment, machine and motor parts, industrial chemicals, Office materials, Kitchen intensils, Electronics, Building machineries, electrical appliances etc. Even Uk depend on Germany for supply of all this, you cant become self productive overnight, Africa, South America, most part of Asia, Some parts North America dont have the technology and you cant get the technology based on APC propaganda

Always saying things without thinking them through.. Our largest raw material is crude oil and we ship it overseas and take $bn in forex to import its refined products.. Fuel imports take over 60% of forex.
Also, if u e talking about raw materials, can we locally manufacture machinery and parts to process raw materials..
Just take a look at Dangote, the raw material, limestone is in abundance in Naija, earthmoving equipment like CAT, liebebherr, terex, bomag, and crusher, conveyor, furnace etc.. None of these can be made in Naija..

Don't worry, that is going to soon hit your pocket hard....if you are doing any project in Nigeria now, materials have gone up by about 33%. Next round is these people and landlords to start gradually increase house rent and prices of other stuff we have come to take for granted.

Even if the forex reverses go up to $100 billion and the price of oil is $110 per barrel. We should keep the forex restrictions. The best thing to ever happen to Nigerian.
