Long ago, in a time where history books could not reach, in a time of chaos, a kingdom was in the brink of collapse.

The Elders are once again holding a meeting to settle a dispute between two men. The younger of the men had accused the older of claiming a land which belongs to their maternal grandmum. The elder had said that the younger is born of his aunty and therefore don't have access to the land.
After some long argument and rebuttal the elders finally settled the dispute, the land would be shared equally.
'Don't near that land, if you do. I'll kill you' The older cousin said
'You'll do what?' an elder said 'Don't you have respect for elders?
This dispute has been settled here'
'Who gave you power? We know no one rules Igodomigodo after the last Ogiso died' the older cousin said and marched out of the chamber where the meeeting was held.
'You can go. We do what we can to protect you' the Elders told the younger cousin
'This is how they behave. No respect for us, they always oppose us.' an elder called Aifumwan said
'Maybe we need a king' Ero, one of the prominent elder said
'Yes, Ero is right. We need a king' another elder seconded
'A man who'll lead our great kingdom to victory'
'We need a king'
The elders decided to schedule a meeting for the next day on which they would agree on who will be the king and why they choose him to be king.

Messengers were sent round the towns and villages to all the elders, some women were invited to cook because meetings like this, they reasoned, are not held on empty stomach.
As planned and expected, the Elders were sitted and tables were arranged.
'Are we cooking stones?' Elder Ero said
'We are on it' the senior lady in charge of kitchen said
'Don't you know our stomach are twitching' he added
The young ladies present were assigned to distribute the dishes.
'It's only to eat goat head that they know' A passerby said while others with him laughed and gave the Elders a mocking look.
One of the Elders presumely the youngest was clearly angry and would have smitten the passerby if he had not been soothed by Elders.
'Just leave him, the excreta they fail to clean up today will soil them tomorrow' an Elder said
A young man was sent to bring kola, on bringing it. He gave the tray to the oldest of the Elders who tool his own and prayed 'This kola will bring blessing to us, our future generation and our allies'
'Ise!' they chorused
'My fellow elders, I greet you all' Ero said
'We all know why we are here. But should incase you don't know why you are here. We are not here to eat but we want to choose our new king' he added
'The people look us as weak people, they never listen to us. The army won't leave their houses for battlefield, daily we lose territories to invaders. We need a king to direct and organise us' Aifuwa said
'Then, who do we make king?' an elder asked
'I will suggest we choose Edoba' another said
'No' Ero said 'We need a conqueror as a leader, not just a commoner'
'Then we won't find any' one Elder called Erumwruese said
'We would' Aifuwa said
'Then who?'
'There is this king who met a kingdom in chaos, reunited them, led them to victory' Ero said
'King, you said? Why will a king leave his better kingdom and settle for a mediocre kingdom like ours?' one Elder asked
'And which king is that'
'Is it the king of Nok'
'Which Nok? You mean those people who are blackened by their smeltings and can't see clearly in the sun. We are better than them'
'No' Ero said 'King Oduduwa, he's one of the greatest king around and he has also trained his sons to be great and feared generals'
'So one of his sons will be our king?'
'Yes' Ero said
'If that's the case we'll send a delegate to Ife tomorrow' they concluded and dismissed the meeting

News filtered round Igodomigodo that a new king would be installed soon. Most of the citizenry were happy, while some others mocked the Elders 'Can anything good come from those old stooge' they said. Some of the citizens donated food items so that those going on the mission would have something to eat, still others gave cowries, beads, bronze articles to the Elders so that everything would be in place.
For the delegates that would be sent to Ife. Ero and Aifuwa were the main delegates, while the young men would carry coral beads and other royal materials. The gifts would be carried by the slaves and servants. The agile and muscular men among them would provide security for the team.
'Lie down' one of the able bodied agile young men said in a whispering manner
The others complied and bent themselves with the small hill covering their body frames except for their faces.
'Who are those people?' one of the young men asked
'Perhaps, they are one of those hill tribe warrior clans who have just returned from battle' the agile young man who doubled as a scout said
'One day our warriors will be feared like these ones' another young man said.
'And also respected' another quipped
The third day on their journey about 30 kilometer from home, they met a river on their way.
'How do we get past?' a young man asked
'Maybe some will swim across with load on their heads and while others would try to wade through the water' a young man said
Meanwhile, why they were still contemplating, Ero and some of the young men went into the woods around the river and start cutting trunks of small trees.
'Why don't we cut bigger ones?' one of the young men asked
'Because we are in a hurry' Ero said 'We'll not be able to wait for days before we make a canoe'
'So what are we making?' he asked again
'A raft. We used to make them when we were younger'
The goods and people were transported in three batches across the raft that was made, with Ero and one young man called Agbondivwin pedaling the raft.
'We still have days till we reach Ife' Ero said after they had crossed the river and made a little campfire to warm themselves from the chilling water that they just crossed.
'May our ancestors guide us as we go to sleep' Aifuwa said before they went to sleep
'Ise!' they all chorused as the agile men went to take position to defend the camp against attack from invaders.

'It's been a long walk from Benin' one of the young men said
The servants carrying the gifts to present to the king of Ife were stopped by the guards guarding the territory round Ife. Ero and Aifuwa went to the guards and starts explaining to the guards about their mission and what they carried along. After an unsuccessful attempt to agree with them, the guards did check the items. When the guards saw the gift items they allowed them to go albeit with three guards leading them.
'We'll make sure you are safe' one of the guards said
'Are we going to prison?' one of the young men of Igodomigodo asked
'No, but let's get to the king first. He'll give his verdict'
The young men looked at each other and started to speak in low tones. They were amazed at the size of the kingdom, even after walking for a long time they still have not gotten to the capital town.
It was almost evening when they got to one small town, on getting there the guards met with the keepers of the village and discussed with them to make sure the visitors are comfortable and well kept.
'We'll be going to join the others at the post, the keepers will make you comfortable' one of the guards told Aifuwa
'We'll try our best to cooperate with them' Aifuwa told the guards
After eating their meal and taking their bath that night. Ero met with Aifuwa to plan on their next line of action since they were very close to Ife.
'We'll present the gift first' Aifuwa said
'You remember I used to visit Ife when I was younger?' Ero said
'Yes. You always brought fishes along with you. Those fishes were really delicious'
'Those period, I used to visit the king while he was much younger'
'Okay'
'You know he liked seeing me around his palace often'
'Yes. What about it?'
'It's about everything. The king doesn't like gifts'
'Why?'
'He said gifts do corrupt people'
'Why didn't you say this in Igodomigodo?'
'Because I want us to have a king'
'Okay you'll talk to him since you closer to him than us'
Ero left the room with one of the big wrappers and went outside the building under the moonlight. Suddenly, he saw the silhoutte of a man coming towards him. Ero quickly hid behind the building, he took care to avoid his shadow from being seen by the approaching figure.
Grabbing the impostor by the right arm, Ero pulled the man towards himself and burst out laughing.
'So it's you'
'Old cat, you have not changed' the man said
'Aifuwa is inside. Let's meet him' Ero said
On seeing him Aifuwa nearly screamed 'Idomwina! What are you doing here?'
Re: When The Dumb Speaks by liohan: 6:38am On Mar 19, 2016
'I was told by some folks who saw you people that you are on this way and my thought is that either you or Ero will be with them so I have to catch up with you' Idomwina said
'You forgot us for years even without sending any message, is that how to do it' Ero said with an indifferent face
'See, my brother! It's my wife people. They made me chief of their community after her father died and since then I've not been able to move like before'
'Ehn ehen, we have heard you' Ero said
'So what are you going to do in Ife?'
'You know before you left, there was a power tussle between Agbonayimwan and the Big Three'
Ero said
'Yes. I know when we have to run out of our house every day and return in the night'
'No, I didn't run with you'
'Ehn, I didn't say you. We all know you're an old cat'
'So, after the Big Three finally agreed to allow Agbonayimwan to lead, they started using him as puppet but it reached a stage where he couldn't be controlled anymore...'
'And Agbonayimwan was dethroned' Aifuwa added
'By the Big Three?' Idomwina asked
'No, they conspired and dropped a forbidden thing in his palace which made him to lose the people's support' Ero said
'You don't mean it!'
'So the Elder decided to intervene by ruling for the interim but we also lost the people's respect when Asemota forcefully collected another man's wife'
'hmmm' Idomwina sighed with his bald head dropping down in a submissive way
'I will go with you. Let me do this for the soil of my birth' Idomwina finally said 'I will only send a message to my in-laws and be with you'
The next morning when they were preparing to leave. Ero called everyone together and charged everyone to be of good behaviour. The young men, he told not not cause trouble. The slaves, to behave like princes. Because, the plan would be jeopadised if anyone misbehaves.
The slaves were all given good robes to put on and they all cut their hair and beards which made them attractive like suitors from the city of Baghdad.

When the company of the Igodomigodo delegates arrived at the eastern gate of Ife. They were welcomed by the guards who escorted them to the palace. 'Save for the Elders dressing, the delegates were like the Moor who invaded the Noks but they might be rich people' one guard said to his companion.
The delegates were amazed at the pattern of building in Ife which made them to respect this king the more, they believed their country would soon have when the great king's son became their king. The strets are one of the best they have ever seen even eclipsing the best description that they ever heard.
It was another suspense when they got to the palace. The polished red mud wall shone brighter than moonlight, it was a beauty to behold. Two ferocious guards with wide chests stood at the entrance of the palace which had an antelope skull on the left side and a lion skull on the right side.
'Go in' the palace guards to the delegates whose mouth were agape with the sight they just saw.
Slowly and carefully, they moved into the palace. There was no discussion as everyone was silent so as not to disturb the serenity of the palace.
'Eroo!' someone shouted
'Oyewole' Ero said almost jumping on his feet, he wanted to meet with him but he remembered he was with others, so he motioned to Oyewole that he will meet him later. However, one of the palace guards said the king was busy and would be free in some hours so the delegates should be in the waiting room before he comes in.
Having gotten an ample chance to meet with Oyewole, Ero seized it immediately.
'Old cat, you are here' Oyewole said
'The antelope that gave the lion a hot pursuit. I greet you!' Ero said
'It's been long time since we met, how are you doing?'
'I'm doing well'
'Who are those people with you? Have you come to marry one of the king's daughter?'
'No, it's not about me and beside I don't fancy women again'
'Hahaha' Oyewole burst out laughing.
'You! Don't fancy women, don't say that again. Oyewole said with a smile on his face
'Then why are you here?'
'It would be better not to spill the beans out of the bag now. You will hear once we meet the king'
'Is it a serious issue?' Oyewole said shifting close to Ero
'Yes it is a serious one, infact very serious' Ero said
'Okay, hope you brought some gift for me?'
'After we are through. Let me join the others before it's too late' Ero said adjusting his wrapper on his waist and went to the sit in the waiting room.

The chief of the palace guards waved to Ero who in company of Aifuwa and Idomwina stood aside from the others and spoke in low tones.
A curtain was opened and the delegates all stood up but they were directed to the main palace room where they all sat.
'Kabîosi' The king most senior attendant said waving his horsetail as the king walked into the palace with two guards on his both sides.
'Ero!' the king said
'Kabîosi' Ero and the delegates said prostrating on the ground
'You are welcome' king Oduduwa said 'Ero this one you came with these people, hope you are not here for my daughter?
Because I'm not giving her to you' he added as everyone burst out laughing
'Give them wine to drink' the king tokd the attendants
The maidens served wines to all the delegates with a calabash except for the Elders who they served with lion's skin tightly stretched in a cylinder shape.
'You must be hungry' the king said
'Nobody comes to my palace hungry'
'Serve them good food' he said pullig his robes to his sides
The delegates ate to their fill, Ero was impressed with the way the servant co-ordinated themselves. 'Do the king know why they came' he thought or is he using foresight Ero couldn't tell.
'So why are you here' the king voice switched to a mild baritone which woke Ero from his thought.
'Khhhm... Uhm' Ero cleared his throat 'Long live the king'
'Ise!' the delegates said
'Oh king! When a sheep is lost, it needs it's shepherd to direct it home. A tender chicken needs to be shown it's house before it can decide for itself'
'True' the king said nodding his head
'A hunter never goes to the forest without learning form the masters except he wants to explain to lions how he got bitten by a goat'
'Ero, you are confusing me. What do you want' the king said
'When a child starts to stand, he needs his parents support to make him stand on his feet unless he wants to fall down, we are your children and we need you to give us your support'
'I don't remember when I gave birth to you or any of these gentlemen here. Get clearer, Ero'
'Kabiyesi, our people are suffering, our land is in chaos we are even forced to pay for fetching water from our stream that mother nature has given us freely'
'What am I supposed to do? Fight wars against your invaders?'
'No kabiyesi it's more than that. We need a leader'
'No!' Oduduwa thundered
'I would not leave my palace here and go to Igodomigodo'
'Please! Kabiyesi' the delegates prostrated
'You want me to include Igodomigodo as part of Ife and rule?'
'Yes'
The king stood up walked a pace and two looked around, raise his flowing robe with his left hand, then stop suddenly and went to his throne and starts nodding his head.
'You want me to rule you' he muttered
The delegates looked at each other without saying a word.
'I can't' he said breaking the silence
'What about if we pray you, your son?'
'My son?' he asked
'Yes kabiyesi'
'None of my son can rule a kingdom like Igodomigodo and besides all of them except the youngest one are not with me in the palace'
'The youngest?' Ero said
'Yes he is just a growing man, not sure he can lead a street now'
'Kabiyesi, let him come and help us we'll treat him well' Ero said
'In that case. I'll think about it. The palace guards will lead you to a chamber where you can rest. Come back tomorrow morning' he said
