What exactly does Wizkid, Flavour, Phyno, Olamide have in common? [That makes them a successful musician?] PART 1

Nigeria boasts of many successful artistes who have won several international and local awards. These musicians make millions, drive expensive cars and live in luxury houses. They go on tours to different countries and bag multi-million naira endorsement deals.

But how exactly did they make it? Why do they stand out when there are thousands of talented, upcoming musicians who have been trying for years to attain stardom but are still in the streets? In fact, the big question is ‘what exactly do these stars all have in common?’

Well, the answer is…nothing. Yes, nothing. So that brings us to our first point.

Be Unique

Have you ever heard the beat at the beginning of a song, and even before the artiest voice comes up, you correctly guess whose song it is? Yes, it happens because these musicians discovered their niches and decided to base their music on it. It’s almost impossible to mistake a song by Phyno for Flavour’s or Psquare. Likewise, you can’t hear Olamide’s song and mistake it for Burna Boy’s or Dbanj or hear Wizkid and mistake it for Davido even though they are both Yoruba singers and MI for Ice Prince (Hausa rappers). There’s just this uniqueness to their music that makes your mind categorize them differently as the bests in their particular style. Phyno raps in Ibo, Olamide raps in Yoruba, Burna boy bases on afro beat, Flavour, highlife, Patoranking reggae, Wizkid and Davido sing pop but if you listen to both musicians you will definitely agree that their styles are different. Even Terry G is based on…..ughm, lets say…madness. You might call it noise, but then, he made millions from his mad/noise music. Why? Because he wasn’t trying to copy anybody! He just did his mad singing and there was no one competing with him in that type of music. These musicians don’t go about imitating each other. Have you ever heard someone say ‘I don’t feel like listening to Olamide, please play Phyno’ or am tried of listening to Wizkid’s songs, play Psquare or Davido! People will not say stuffs like that if all these musicians sound alike.

That’s the little problem between Olamide and Lil Kesh. Yes, I agree they both wonderful artiest, good at what they do. But have you ever asked between Olamide and Lil Kesh, who is better?’ Most people (probably over 80%) will vote for Olamide. Why? because 1. There songs sound very much alike. 2. Lil Kesh is Olamide’s brought up, and 3. Olamide entered the game before Lil Kesh. But the most important thing to note there is that, their songs are alike. Unlike in the case of Olamide and Phyno, or Wizkid and Davido, where you’ll have roughly 50/50 split. Just think about it.

Now let’s take a look at Kiss Daniel. Have you ever wonder what so special about Woju? Why did it become a major hit? Well I’ll tell you. That kind of beat was not mainstream or in vogue at the time the song was released. Kiss Daniel didn’t opt for a remark of Davido’s Aye or Mavin’s Dorobucci. He simply went to the studio, got a nice new beat and shocked us all. He came up with is own stuff. And that’s why it’s just a sorry sight to see lots and lots of talented upcoming musicians try to get popular by using beats that are clearly roughly cut out beats of already popular songs, maybe just a little modification or those screaming Wizkid’s signatures, yaayi! Or Yaga! You are only popularizing Wizkid style, not introducing yours. When people hear that, they don’t say who sang this song? The music is good! Instead, they are like, ‘I love this song. Wizkid is really good’, without even realizing that it’s your song.

So I guess you should think twice next time before going to the studio and ask your producer to give you ‘ that Patoranking’s my woman’ beat for your next track.
