The social media can be time consuming just like any other activity on the internet. If care is not taken, one may spend more than half of each day posting, replying, chatting and sharing content without getting any portion of productivity from it. Staying productive on the social media is of essence for every youth.

A 2015 report on Social Media Addiction estimates that users aged between 15 and 19 spend at least 3 hours per day on average on social media platforms majorly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It also states that those in the 20 to 29 age bracket spend about two hours on the social media. Their usage of it varies.

TIME WASTED BY PEOPLE ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA

According to Go-Globe, with the way people are addicted to the social media today, we collectively spend 39,757 years of our time on Facebook alone in a day. Their infographics show the following eye opening statistics on how much time is wasted on the social media.

Earlier people use newspaper for their morning news but now 16 percent users rely on Facebook or Twitter for their morning news.
4 is the average number of social/communication apps that smartphone users have on their phone.
Uploading images on Social media networking sites have become the trend nowadays; 5 million images are uploaded daily on Instagram.
More than 500 million tweets are sent out per day by users.
People prefer watching videos on YouTube i.e. the average visitor spends 15 minutes a day on YouTube.
Of iPhone users, 28 percent check their Twitter feed before getting up in the morning.
It is estimated that the average person spends nearly one-quarter of their work day browsing social media for non-work related activities.
People are wasting their precious time on social media networking sites. Between 60 percent and 80 percent of people time on the internet of work has nothing to do with work.

HELP YOURSELF MANAGE YOUR TIME ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA
Answering these three questions could help shaping how you manage your time on the social media.

How much time do you spend on the social media?
How frequently do you visit your social media account?
What do you usually do on the social media?
As a youth, it is imperative that you utilize your time on Facebook, twitter and other social media platforms to productive ends. Make every moment on the social media productive. Make every moment count.



HOW TO SAVE TIME SPENT ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA
DEDICATE PARTICULAR TIME TO THE SOCIAL MEDIA

It is expected of you that by now, you should have a personal timetable. Dedicate a particular period of the day or week for social media usage. Visiting the social media shouldn’t even be of top priority in your to-do list except if your activities there are toward productive ends. Make sure you are not being unjust to yourself by spending the whole day on any social media platform.

USE MULTI-LEVEL SOCIAL MEDIA TOOLS
There are some tools that could help you save time spent on the social media by affording you the benefit of posting on multiple platforms at a time. Such tools include; tweetdeck, hootsuite and uber social make you connect and post on as many social media account and platforms as possible. Some social media networks are also ‘inter-connectable’. You can connect your twitter account with Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin so that when you post on one, it would appear on the others too almost immediately. The tools save you not only time but stress of duplicating efforts. Try them out!

Turn off Social Media Notification

That beep that distracts you from being stable with your schedule is better turned off than on.

UNINSTALL SOCIAL MEDIA APPS

If you simply can’t resist the urge to use the social media especially on your phone, it’s time you uninstall those distractive apps. Don’t let those weapons of mass destruction fashioned against you prosper.

KEEP AWAY YOUR PHONE WHILE STUDYING/WORKING

To keep up with getting things done, keep away your phone while studying or working. As much as you may want to multitask, focus on one thing at a time. It helps a lot.
