To the layman, they are known as dancers in music videos. Others call them ‘music video models but what they are professionally called is ‘video vixens’. Basically, their job is to keep viewers glued to their screen. However, the profession is not as easy as it seems and it takes a lot of work to remain relevant. Below are some of the challenges video vixens go through.
1. Poor Pay
Coupled with the difficulty in getting jobs, the average video vixen earns a paltry N20,000 to N50,000. Some earn way lesser as music stars feel they are doing these girls a favour by letting them feature in their videos.
2. Bad Publicity
In order to retain high level of patronage in the ‘video vixens industry’, one has to constantly be the subject of gossip blogs and soft sell magazines. It is common knowledge that some video vixens resort to staging social media drama among themselves and leaking rumours to bloggers in a quest to remain in the news.
3. No Career Path
It is a profession that comes with little or no prospects when one is retired.
‘Video vixen from 2011-2015’ is not a past job experience a lady can add to her CV.
4. Poor public perception
Most people mistake video vixens for girls of easy virtue. Many would swear ‘video vixen’ is a less subtle name for ashawo. There is always the question of ‘Doesn’t she have parents or siblings at home?’. In many cases, the nature of ‘her job’ might prevent a girl from getting married early due to the way people view her.
5. Introduction To Hard Drugs
In cases where one is required to strip and put up some wild act, some experienced vixens and music directors usually offer hard drugs to young aspiring vixens to boost their self confidence. Hard drugs are addictive and may cause a lady to do things she might live to regret.
6. Skin lightening, cosmetic surgeries
In this era where Nigerian artistes would rather use latino girls in their videos than our local girls, these video vixens try to keep up by having cosmetic surgeries to make them look sexier and applying all sorts of skin lightening lotion to look as white as their foreign counterparts.
7. Unwanted Pregnancies/Abortion
Inexperienced teenage girls who venture into such profession might not see this coming. Going by the high rate of baby-mamas amongst musicians, one can be easily manipulated into unprotected sex with a celebrity that would lead unwanted pregnancy.
