While meeting with South East police officers over the increasing crime in the South East zone, the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mike Okiro, stated that escalation in armed robberies and kidnappings in the south east is "unacceptable and must be brought under control immediately."

But an Assistant Inspector General of Police told the IG that police officers are afraid of confronting robbers. He said, "Our policemen are afraid. When they hear the burst of a vehicle exhaust, they run away. Training and re-training is what we need. PMF (Police Mobile Force) men are supposed to be the last men on the defence when there is crises, but they are the first to contact now".

The IG stated that the statistics show that Abia, Enugu, and Imo States have the highest rate of violent crimes and kidnappings. And vigilante groups in the South East, with the support of the state governments, also perpetrate crimes or are used by powerful individuals to carry out criminal activities.

He also blamed the Governors of the South East for not doing enough to enhance the performance of policemen in their states.
