The wife of Anambra governor, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, has described a baby abandoned at a refuse dump and later rescued on March 22 as a perfect Easter gift to the state.

The day-old baby, who has been named “Baby Moses”, was discovered at Nibo in Awka South local government area of the state.

He was the third abandoned baby rescued under the two-year old administration of Governor Willie Obiano. Obiano said this during a visit to ascertain the health status of “Baby Moses’’ at the Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, on Friday.

The governor’s wife assured that she would take full responsibility for the care and upkeep of the baby like the previous ones through her NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE). “As the mother of six million Anambra citizens, it is my responsibility to care and nurture the baby who may eventually turn-out to be governor of the state in future,’’ she said. On what may have induced a mother to abandon her child, she said that no one knew.

“Nobody knows the reason why the mother of this child abandoned him, but on one hand I condemn the act of abandoning the baby while on the other hand I commend her for wrapping the baby well and ensuring that he did not suffocate.

“Perhaps, she heeded my previous plea for mothers with unwanted babies to keep them where they can be seen and taken care of.

“They can drop them near governor’s lodge, fire station or a hospital,’’ she said.

Obiano said that she was happy that the baby was healthy and well-taken care of by the teaching hospital.

She praised the professionalism of the doctors, nurses and management for sparing no effort and material in their response to ensure the survival of the baby.

Also in the spirit of Easter, Obiano said that she was ready to ensure that “Baby Moses’’ and every other baby grow up healthy.

She urged Anambra women to imbibe the biblical injunction to “love your neighbour as yourself”, and “be our brothers and sisters keepers’’.

“Always look out to help those in need around us especially in the present harsh economic condition of the country,’’ she said.

Earlier, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Lawrence Ikeakor, said that they received “Baby Moses’’ in critical condition but thanked God that he was responding to treatment. He said that the baby, who weighs 1.25 kilogram, would remain in the incubator for two weeks when they expect that the weight would improve to 1.8kg.

Ikeakor commended the wife of the governor for her caring nature and visit to the hospital, as well as the state government for providing the equipment necessary for treatment of such cases.

“The equipment is assisting us in the effective discharge of our duties,” he said.
