PMB doesn't need to place ban on shoes for to ur shoes to sell.
just try to improve on your quality. They are many locally made goods that are better than the foreign ones.

Despite how good America economy looks, they do not place ban on many items rather they focused on making available enabling environments for Foreign investors to operate thus providing jobs for her citizens

greenpasture:

You make a good point about quality selling the product but you underestimate the average Nigerians insecurity that makes him/ her select foreign labels over anything else. Brazil and India took the bold step of defending local industries and today the results are obvious. They make heavy equipment like planes, trucks, armaments, fashion ware, etc

Dangote for instance never enters an industry unless the industry is protected; cement, sugar, and now coming up - tomatoes.

Absolutely nothing wrong with defending selected industries.

Your statement is patently FALSE and l will give you an example:
what about Petroleum...... or are you not aware that he is building a Refinery in Lagos?

Is the Petroleum Industry "Protected" in any way or liberalised? undecided undecided

You see, there are STEP/PROCESS in achieving a desired result (local content) without causing unnecessary problems for the consumers.
First, you assist the industry to stand on its feet ( by encouraging production and mopping up its "excesses" that are not being sold) while you allow its QUALITY to convince consumers to switch to it!

On the other hand, if you increase tariff on foreign import (Protectionism, making it costlier to buy) while the local alternative is still of poor quality (and therefore undesirable), people will still prefer the costlier foreign brand .... and the local one will die a natural death.
What follows is inflation

Our Manufacturers need to emerge from their "get-rich-quick" mentality and focus on quality service delivery......... and the rewards will come naturally (assuming those "criminals brothers" of ours who FAKE everything good can be tackled so they dont skim the hard work of others)

Is a welcome development cos our igbo(biafrians) can make good quality footwear with good leather fibre if given the support but they have to take their time to make the finishing look neat just like the foreign footwear and you hardly see a mistake everything is clean, neat and loving compare to ones we make here.

They Will only do it when people like Dangote open a new shoe plant in Kano. No time has Nigerian government get sense. The government always rush to say the country import everything but ask them what are they doing to support and provide good manufacturing policies to boost local companies especially SME, they tell you stories. What a madness.

ok, in the Yoruba bible, shoes are still referred to as bata, so obviously the edition I checked is a more recent one.

If anybody has an older version from maybe 1900/1920 or prior, can you look up the translation.

The other explanation could be bata is coincidentally the name of the owner and also the name for shoe.

Some of these Home Made shoes have quality, but their prices compete with Foreign made shoes.

Knowing Nigerians' penchant for profit maximization, banning Foreign product will do away with competition and local producers will foist exhorbitant prices on us, citing irrelevant reasons.

Bayo Akinloye

A United Kingdom-based shoemaker, Adesola Benson, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to impose restrictions on the importation of certain footwear into the country.

According to Benson, such action will encourage local footwear manufacturers to go into mass production which will in turn have a positive effective on the economy.

The shoemaker who relocated from the UK told SUNDAY PUNCH that he was making plans to train 100 shoemakers as a way of ensuring that made-in-Nigeria products are available and patronised.

The entrepreneur who has his factory in Ikorodu in Lagos State pointed out that his aim was to make the town Nigeria’s shoe hub.

Benson noted that local shoemakers will succeed in their enterprise if the Federal Government would allow them to make footwear for paramilitary personnel instead of resorting to importation.

He said, “(Prior to now) I have been able to train about 10 shoemakers. Training is my area of specialisation. The local shoemakers will have breakthrough if Federal Government can encourage local manufacturers like us to make shoes for paramilitary personnel instead of importing. This will not only encourage us it will also boost the nation’s economy by patronising made-in-Nigeria goods. I am happy about the recent gospel of made-in-Nigerian goods being propagated by the Federal Government. It is another way to empower local manufacturers and also boost the nation’s economy.

“Many shoemakers in Nigeria are not educated. So, I want to empower 100 shoemakers in Ikorodu. I mean people who are not opportune to go to the university or don’t have the means to learn in the university like I did. I want Ikorodu to be like a city in Italy that is renowned for shoe-making. I want Ikorodu to be a Mecca for shoes in Nigeria so other states in Nigeria can imitate us.”

Benson further noted that it would benefit the country if the President Muhammadu Buhari banned the importation of shoes.

“Most African countries don’t produce shoes and we have a chance to export to African countries. But if Nigeria still imports substandard shoes, it is going to have a negative effect on local production.

“Well, I had made shoes for the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But the one that brought me to limelight was a pair of shoes that I made for Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi,” he said when asked if prominent Nigerians patronise him.

And what is entry like into the Petroleum refining industry? Is it low and easy access? Of course not. It has exceptionally high economic moats. You need a licence and you need tons of expertise and speciality financing. The industry by its very nature is a defended industry. To add case to point 80% of Dangote's refined products will be exported. He has made that clear. This is not a good example to use.

You see, there are STEP/PROCESS in achieving a desired result (local content) without causing unnecessary problems for the consumers.

You seem to be quoting from a text book and an old out of date one for that matter. There are NO FREE markets in the world. All markets are protected - it depends on what sector. If you check the Green book (Customs Tariff) you will find that Government imposes high tariffs on industries it wants to defend. This has been happening since 1971. Nothing new there. Another way of defending your local industry is by imposing high entry requirements and standard that require the issuance of licences - this is true for banking, telecomms and the like. So my dear, protecting the local market is not something that PMB just thought of, it is something that has been going on well before you were born. All that has happened is that some additions have been made to the protected list and there is better execution on inward bound inspection.

You also mention inflation as a necessary fall out of importation. You are absolutely correct. Where your argument fails is that demand for imported products is price elastic and that people will continue to buy them irrespective of their price. One example shows that this is not so. The dominant juice drink in Nigeria was Just Juice until the government imposed high tariffs on imported juices. The results is a plethora of local juices. Why do you think that Nigerians will not produce high-quality alternatives? The leather used in Italy for shoes where does it come from?

Believe in yourself and your people.

There are no 100% open markets anywhere in the world. Markets are protected in several ways; high cost of entry, licensing restrictions, specified standards and tariffs. The petroleum industry you mention is protected by high cost of entry AND licensing restrictions. Licensing and punitive tariffs have been part of the Nigerian landscape since 1971.

Why do you assume local quality will be inferior? What happened to the foreign Just Juice brand when local Chivita entered the fray? You also seem to believe that demand for all foreign goods is elastic irrespective of price? What happened to foreign potato crisps? They were replaced by local plantain chips! What happened to foreign bottled water it wa replaced by local products like Eva, Cascade and the like

If foreign goods are to be allowed, they must come with technology transfer agreements. In the short term there will be discomfort - just like when weaning an addict off crack, but the results will be positive.

Believe in the Nigerian people. PMB does.
