The ongoing fuel scarcity may paralyse medical services in many of the nation’s hospitals, findings by our correspondent have revealed. Owners of private hospitals and operators of medical laboratories, who spoke to our correspondent in Lagos on Tuesday, said they had not been able to function well since the fuel crisis begun. Apart from paying more to get fuel from black market operators, hospital owners said they had to turn patients back in cases of emergency due to the fuel crisis. The Medical Director, Healing Springs Medical Centre, Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Tunde Atunrase, told our correspondent that he could not transfuse and admit a road accident victim over the weekend due to lack of fuel to power his generators. Atunrase said the victim, who was rejected by many other hospitals in the area, was given first aid in his clinic before he was referred to the general hospital in Surulere. He said, “I could only dress the wounds and stabilise him because his condition required a surgical operation to be performed. I needed to take his blood samples and do some tests before we could transfuse him. Unfortunately, the laboratories around the area also did not have electricity to carry out these tests. “Many patients, who we should admit and monitor overnight, have to be sent home because we do not have electricity and sleeping in the dark will only worsen their conditions. I even struggled to get the little fuel in my car. It would be suicidal to embark on any surgery right now if you do not have an alternative source of power to power your generators. A pharmacist, Mr. John Ali, complained that he had to dispose of some vaccines and drugs that were spoilt due to lack of electricity to power the drug store. According Ali, most drugs lose their potency and efficacy when they are not stored under the right temperature. He added, “I just discovered that some drugs we stored have been denatured by the heat. This is because I have been rationing the hours I turn on the generator. “Now, I have to dispose of them. Drugs, especially vaccines, must be stored under a specific temperature to remain potent and efficient. It means that when there is no power to maintain that temperature, the likelihood of compromising their potency is there. “When such drug or vaccine is given to a patient, it is simply useless to the body. So when a pharmacy or a hospital does not have light for two days, many drugs are rendered useless.” Owners of some diagnostic centres, who spoke with our correspondent in Yaba, Lagos, on Tuesday, also said they had not been able to process many medical results due to lack of fuel to power their equipment. One of them, Mr. Ayo Adelaja, lamented that results of tests that should be out within a day had been delayed due to the fuel shortage. He said, “The last fuel I bought was adulterated. It spoilt some of our equipment and I am scared to use it to power others. Many of these equipment cost a fortune and you cannot buy or repair them in the country, so I cannot risk using black market fuel to operate the generators. “We have not had electricity today (Tuesday) and any power surge can destroy the machines. We cannot do tests or analyse anything for now. I just hope the government can find a lasting solution to the scarcity.” Adelaja said, “If the electricity supply is stable, we will not be feeling the pinch of fuel scarcity. A situation where we depend more on generators than the electricity from the operating companies will not work for any sector, especially in the health care delivery division.” http://www.punchng.com/fuel-scarcity-paralyses-labs-hospitals/ lalasticala |

As usual, the Black man in the zoo congregates to steal crude oil from Mbiama Then use it to import tin tomatoes and rice and then use the balance to host Q'ran reciting competition And when you ask him he shouts Sai dullard. . . Let us burn their shop Then the fool went to Sabon gari, burnt the shop of the Biafran man selling mattress and pillow and next week starts shouting that mattress is too expensive in the zoo |

ERODEDEAST:Does hospitals and labs power their buildings with fuel generator how can a fuel genertor power medical equipments with so many horse power mechines. All the hospitals and labs I have visited power their buildings with diesel generator with a high KVA to power all equipments and last I checked diesel is not scarce virtually all stations have diesel and sells at normal price some even sell cheap. Another PDP wailing wailer and goofy grin spotted. |
