The issue of Almajirai has remained worrisome in the mind of northern elites. This is because the practice has been a source of embarrassment to the region. Regrettably enough, northern Nigeria has the highest poverty rate in the country which is almost endemic in the rural areas. This pushes both children and adults into the cities in search for survival and the Almajirai got carried along. He thus voluntary or involuntary transform from a noble student of learning into a vagabond street beggar. Though Almajirci is a good system of education, as it is a sunnah of the prophet Muhammad (SAW) that is practiced in most Muslim countries, but the phenomenon as it is being practiced in the northern part of Nigeria is iniquitous, obsolete and it needs a concerned effort of reform.
The problem is not with the system but the process, the traditional Quránic schools still remain mostly one classroom located outside a mosque, private house or under a tree. The school environment in most cases tends to be unfriendly, overcrowded and unhygienic. The negative impact of the system is child labor in which they have to contribute to the welfare of the parents, some are even required to give a fixed amount of money to the Malams in daily basis, feed themselves, and clothed themselves,
so they have to always roam about at motor parks, house to house, and other public places begging for money. They render services such as plate washers in restaurants and even prohibited places which make some of the Almajirai to result in intermingling with bad people, engaging in prohibited conducts like pocket picking, stealing, or being mobilized by other people to promote violence in return for money. They even waste their times in other unnecessary activities instead of acquiring knowledge.
This is abuse of polygamy, Layla Ali Othman said “our northerners have to stop giving birth to children they cannot train, you have to stop it, or else Baba Buhari should imprison any father that cannot take care of his child”. Parents just delegate the responsibility of their children to a third party at no cost, under the pretext of memorizing the Qurán. One Malam told me some of the children are brought as a result of being a burden. This also brings a sense of economic relief to the parents as they turn a blind eye on the right of the children regarding food, clothing, shelter, guidance and upbringing. This make the children ill quipped towards facing the economic and moral challenges of the future.
We all must realize that the future of Northern Nigeria is being destroyed. These children who have the potential to become productive or even leading citizens in the country are not receiving any meaningful form of education or living a fulfilling existence. As far as I am concerned, the Almajirci system should give way, we no longer need it in the north. I am a Muslim and I know how my religion admonishes us to treat the poor. Whether it is Almajiri education or not, the system should be confined to history. What we must guard against is the tendency of that individuality to have us focused on ourselves to the exclusion of our fellow human beings. The tendency towards selfishness rather than giving, on helping ourselves rather than helping our brothers and sisters in humanity. So we must strike back against the selfishness and greed of out modern world, help out a fellow human being today, not next week, next month, next year but TODAY.
Let’s make the northern Nigeria a better place with one step at a time just like Baba Buhari’s administration, and if that kindness is passed on, it can multiply and multiply.
THANK YOU
