So they don't remember Fela? Fela did more than Abiola did. Abiola was assumed to have the potential to help but he never had the chance but Fela educated Nigerians through their favourite art (MUSIC). Fela has done more than most activists. Why are we pushing his name further away from our minds cause of his life style. Like an African philosopher said, don't hate the idea cause you hate the man, hate the man cause you hate his idea. Fela talked about things that's going on right now. Abami Eda stadium!!!!!!!!!

@Dede1 and @rhymz, unu kwesiri ima na ara di na iche na iche mere na ndi are eweghi out nzuko.unu ahugo na ara nke afu anua bu ara nkwuheri.biko nu onye etinyere na ya onu na iko iyo.anyi na ya abughi of mmadu. one thing am happy about is that the igbos can never hide an evil man. i know that a lot of folks read the thread on the defection of Ohakim to pdp and how the igbos dissected them and all other igbo criminal who said that they are igbo leaders.u know that we igbos will never forgive the turn-coat called Nwobodo for all that he did against the igbos, and so are alot of them. but the problem with the yorubas is (this is no tribal issue) many of them will jump into a fight without asking who is at fault as long as one of the parties is a fellow yoruba person.they will prefare to kill themselves to save their brother outside than tell him the truth.on the other hand,we igbos are willing to fight for our brother, but not for a loosing and shameful fight. there are many heros in yoruba land who have clean hands.we want them to be recognized.bt the clog is , they have far less money than the Bashorun and it will continue to mitigate against them. dear MUZBO correct me if am wrong.

What i see going on here is a tribal conflict.
The truth is that Whether you like it or not,
MKO Abiola is a legend and is the matyr of NIgerian Democracy.

You don't have to like him, But any sensible person would at least respect him.

He did so much for people in his life time - His generousity is yet to be duplicated by any other Nigerian.
You need to hear people testify to know what a wonderful person he was.
This is a man that sent about 5000 children to school.

Naming the Lagos National Stadium after him is the least the FG could do, and it is not even enough.

That man deserves the highest national honour.

Go and find out how he campaigned against the US. for slavery reperations.

Nigerian are truly ungrateful.
because the establishment is now trying to sweep the whole June 12 saga under the carpet like it never happened.
God will punish all those pple - The truth will always prevail.

PS
You say he looted the country's money That is a very ignorant statement for you to make.
Just because Fela made a song called ITT (international Thief Thief) and abused Abiola is not sufficient evidence for you to make that claim.
Abiola and Fela had a personal feud and that song was the result!
If you say Abiola stole money, pls tell us what government position he ever held in his life to enable him to do so.
As the CEO of a multinational company , you cannot embezzle funds and get away wit it.
Not on the scale at which u are claiming abiola did it anyway.
Look at what happened at Enron All the executives of the firm are now in jail.
It is not a corrupt government where no one asks questions, There are channels and official procedures/bureacracy involved.

Beautiful submission sir.   Too bad the broken record ITT choir will choose to remain completely deaf to the truth, since it might interrupt their posthumous jealousy and hatred of Abiola's amazing accomplishments.

ekitikan-

Shouldn't you at least rebut his sensible and valid points before you begin run mouth like twittie?

Dislike the man if you must, the fact still remains that Abiola was not your average Naija Poltician/Rich man. The man made his bones and did good with his money and for his country.

Just Imagine where Naija go dey now if we have just 100 Abiola's,

In 1956 Moshood Abiola started his professional life as bank clerk with Barclays Bank plc in Ibadan, South-West Nigeria. After two years he joined the Western Region Finance Corporation as an executive accounts officer before leaving to Glasgow, Scotland to pursue his higher education.

In Glasgow he received 1st class in political economy, commercial law and management accountancy. He also received a distinction from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

On his returm to Nigeria he worked as a senior accountant at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital, then went onto Pfizer, before joining the ITT Corporation, where he later rose to the position of Vice President, Africa and Middle-East of the entire corporation which was head-quartered in the United States.

As a result Moshood Abiola spend much of his time and made most of his money in the United States, whilst retaining the post of chairman of the corporation's Nigerian subsidiary.

In addition to his duty's throughout the Middle-East and Africa, Moshood Abiola invested heavily in Nigeria and West Africa. He set up Abiola Farms, Abiola bookshops, Radio Communications Nigeria, Wonder bakeries, Concord Press, Concord Airlines, Summit oil international ltd, Africa Ocean lines, Habib Bank, Decca W.A. ltd, and Abiola football club.

In addition to this he also magaged to perform his duties as Chairman of the G15 business council, President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Patron of the Kwame Nkrumah Foundation, Patron of the WEB Du Bois foundation, trustee of the Martin Luther King foundation and director of the International Press Institute[4].

Moshood Abiola sprang to national and international prominence as a result of his philanthropic activities. The Congressional Black Caucus of the United States of America issued the following tribute to Moshood Abiola:

From 1972 until his death Moshood Abiola had been conferred with 197 traditional titles by 68 different communities in Nigeria, in response to the fact that his financial assistance resulted in the construction of 63 secondary schools, 121 mosques and churches, 41 libraries, 21 water projects in 24 states of Nigeria, and was grand patron to 149 societies or associations in Nigeria. In this way Abiola reached out and won admiration across the multifarious ethnic and religious divides in Nigeria.

In addition to his work in Nigeria, Moshood Abiola was a dedicated supporter of the Southern African Liberation movements from the 1970's and he sponsored the campaign to win reparations for slavery and colonialism in Africa and the diaspora. Chief Abiola, personally rallied every African head of state, and every head of state in the black diaspora to ensure that Africans would speak with one voice on the issues

Gbam! May your days be long, may you walk and never stumble and may sky be your limit.
We have to watch out for the antics of Igbo people nowadays. They are for no good! I told them many time "you don't the fingers that feed you."
These envious people want to re-write history and take away our superior culture!
They traveled to South America back and forth to convince our more than 70 million Yoruba people. These people have already established with Orisha and they want to introduce Ani or Chukwu to them. Guess what? They chased them away!
They (Igbo people) should know better that “if lies fly thousand years away, it’s just one day that the truth shall prevail,” that’s exactly what happens to Yoruba culture. Because we (Yorubas) are unaware about the great impact our religion had in New World. Now, there is increasing touring to Nigeria to Ife, since some intruders are trying to pollute our peoples’ mind over there. They come in multitude to trace their lineage. They said many Igbo people have been coming over there in the past and urged them to do DNA test; but they asked “would that change their perception about Ifa, Oshun, Oya e.t.c.?
Igbo people claimed they help Haiti and West indies to push a revolt for independence, but at the end of the day. Haiti had already established with Ogun, Shango and Obatala, while West Indies had established with Oshun and Oya. This should speak volumes about this Yoruba religion. The only religion that made it out of Africa! Check your Wikipedia if you doubt me.
We did not travel to South America to preach about our religion, they embraced it because that’s what most western world hates most (and Ifa divination module is the best gift to mankind)! It became a tool over there to equip communists and socialists to fight hegemony power of capitalists. The then Cuban president, Fidel Castro (publicly announced that his religion is Santeria—blending of catholism with Orisha). I don’t care if anybody hates, Orisha is the movement right now!
They banned it during slavery in America and even banned Bata talking drums. Before America lifted the embargo on Cuba, there were 8 million South Americans in USA practicing Santeria—blending of catholism with Orisha. Now, that there is no restriction; they envisaged that before 2030 there will be 50 million people practicing Santeria in just USA.
Abiola has left a giant step on the sand of time.
Igbo people boost of being rebellious, even they categorically stated it on their Bia-failed website, but at the end of the day, they always lose.

Just watch out on this forum, they will be the first to post anything sensitive about other tribes and be the first-ten to comment with scolded diatribes. Then, if you lashed back at them, they would come out in multitudes to jump on you.

I think it's a good ideal, the problem is that it's coming late, it should have been renamed long ago, MKO was a man of the people

Crazy idea.

MKO fought to be president for himself. MKO wanted to be president not because he loves the country too much but for personal reasons. He should not be mistaken as a nationalist. I hate all these sentiments especially that propagated by AC governors. Why can't it be named after sports men that have done Lagos State and the country at large proud. Why can't it be named after men and women that have achieved in their various fields so that it will serve as an encouragement to others. I don't see any difference with MKO and OLU Falae. They bought contested for presidency with army generals. Soon the stadium will be named after Olu Falae.

Rubbish

Nigeria is known for naming structures after butchers, serial killers  and murderers. It will be a breath of fresh air to name the stadium after someone not associated with murder and genocide. I like the idea.

The problem most times with our southwest brothers here is that they reduce every good opportunity for us here,i mean every1 to learn from each by inducing tribal remarks and sentiments when there is an opposition to thier views.
The habit of reducing every arguement here to Igbo-Yoruba is also very stupid.I find it insulting when sb makes glaringly stupid tribal remarkz or drop stupid tribalistic epithet here in order to make themselves feel good,be U yoruba or igbo,it's high time we stopped throwing stupid tribally induced childish temper tantrumz.Arguements should be based on facts, intelligence and a moderate dose of mannerisms that are generally acceptable. These dayz i find it hard to comment on political issues here because some kidz here will hijack it and turn it to a child's play/tribal cursing match.I keep asking what is the use of a moderator here if he/she does't act when they should? There's too much tribal bias and cursing on nairaland.I ve nothing again to say abt the suitability of Abiola's immortalization or the proposed idea of naming TNS after him.I ve said my bit already besidez those re not our worries for now.Nairalanderz please make Una use Una head O!
Re: Lagos National Stadium To Be Named After M.K.O Abiola by solsy(f): 10:34am On Aug 05, 2009
we should not get sentimental and insult one another over this issue. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions. Personally, i feel Abiola is just been overated, all his so called investments are no where to be found, a good man should be able to continue in his legacy even after his death. Everybody have their good part as well as their bad.If it was awolowo, i could still agree

You are so stupid! Igbo people are the genesis of all the ranting and raving on this forum, sooner the people on the Forum realize that. Hay, suckers you can stay on YOUTUBE and put and limit all your vituperations over there. If you bring your hatred on NL you will always lose, because you are culturally inferior and you don't have an history. You claim you are rebellious everywhere you go, I know that will never land you anywhere. If you want to break away, you can do it, rather than blame it on Hausa today, Yoruba tomorrow and all the breakaway minorities next tomorrow.
