Enugu—The Enugu State government is to build 2, 500 houses for low and high income earners, the state Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Solomon Onah, has said.

Five hundred of the houses would cost N7.5 billion.

Onah spoke, yesterday, during a ceremony to mark the commencement of the sale of forms for 500 plots of land at the New Independence Layout along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway in Enugu.

He further said that only single family or twin duplexes /bungalows of not more than two floors, including the ground floor would be built in the new layout under Public- Private Partnership, PPP.

Misplaced priority, instead of spending this money in housing, Enugu should partner with private enterprises and investors to create jobs for its population. What we call development in Nigeria is not sustainable. D

It's a good step. Housing is very important. Every developed country provides housing for its citizens.

The Government will put in the infrastructure while the individuals build their houses.

The lands have already been allocated
Re: Enugu Build 2,500 Houses For Civil Servants by Baroba(m): 9:24am On Apr 13, 2016
These houses will end up in the hands of government officials and there various croonies, Enugu state former governor Chimaroke Nnamani used schemes like these to amass obscene amount of wealth and real estate for himself and family members.... Crooks.
Re: Enugu Build 2,500 Houses For Civil Servants by mesoprogress(m): 9:27am On Apr 13, 2016
Seems everyone is blind to what is happening. Enugu is largely run on allocation from federal government, federal government is funded from oil sales. If oil finally becomes very cheap, allocation will reduce, no money again to pay so called civil servants that will live in the house project. Northern governors like El Rufai are already attracting foreign investors. The key point is being self sufficient in the face of dwindling revenue. House projects are wonderful, but it is a misplaced priority in the present condition. See https://www.nairaland.com/3044605/way-out-mess-nigeria-part

Building houses means creating jobs as somebody will sell the cement, a mason will fix the blocks, a plumber will do the water system, mama Nkechi will sell food at the site, Papa Chukwuma will use his bus to take workers to site, Gbenga will do the POP, Ahmadu will sell Suya to the carpenter after he gets his pay; Dangote Cement distributor in Enugu will employ more hands to load his trucks.
Mass Housing, real estate and capital projects is one of the key ways of creating jobs even abroad in developed countries

I hope it would not be like the case of Akwa Ibom where almost all the low cost housing Estates originally developed for workers have been commandeered by politicians. Some of them even buying up to 4 plots then go ahead to destroy the already built apartments to erect their mansions
