The North African states maintain their dominance on the continent with Egypt having by far the largest and most powerful army, navy and airforce. Though having the most technologically advanced military in Africa South Africa’s drop to 5th can be attributed to a myriad of factors ; funding shortages, inadequate personnel and a very small Navy and Air force. Under apartheid, South Africa had arguably the most feared and well-funded armed forces on the continent, but since the end of the Cold War and white-minority rule in the early 1990s, Pretoria has cut military spending dramatically in favor of health, housing, education and social security.

Nigeria’s rise stems from the recent series of embarrassing defeats she suffered from the hands of the Boko Haram Insurgency, which at a point controlled huge swatches of land the size of Costa-Rica. The unprecedented rearmament drive- which included the acquisitions, attack helicopters, armed attack UAV’s, radar/surveillance aircraft’s,nearly a nearly a dozen Navy ships and the integration of its orbital satellite for the military made the Nigerian military far more capable than it was years ago. Its recent success against the Boko Haram Insurgency bears testament to the fact.

Egypt is on course to have the most powerful military in the Arab world. Th Egyptian air force is larger than the Nigerian and South African air forces combined. The Egyptian military recently took delivery of 50 Mig-29’S from Russia- adding bite to its already powerful air force. The Egyptian Navy is also the largest on the continent, consisting of Frigates, Destroyers, missile bats and submarines. Egypt also produces the American Abram Tank under license. Add to it the billions of dollars in military it receives from the United States it is clear the Egyptian armed forces will remain a force to be reckoned with for a long time.
