Gov Ugwanyi meets community leaders today

NSUKKA—Enugu State Police Command, yesterday, arrested about eight persons over the ongoing violence at Alor Uno in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state, following supremacy battle over alleged slavery.

Ugbene and Ejuona communities in Alor Uno have been involved in supremacy battle over who are the aborigines or slaves in the last 40 years.

The matter, however, reached a climax when a young Ugbene man, Arinze Ngwoke, was, on April 11, reportedly chased by youths from Ejuona and attacked with machete for taking a road reserved for the aborigines, Ejuona, who claimed that the Ugbene people are “slaves.”

Ngwoke is the second victim after Izuchukwu Ezema, who was alleged to have been attacked in March and is still in hospital due to machete cuts inflicted on him for passing through the same route.

Weekend, a woman, Onyedikachukwu Omeje was attacked with her three months old baby by some youths, who claimed to come from Ejuona, for also trespassing on the same forbidden road. Two other women, Augustina Oke and Chidera Attah, have also been attacked for allegedly committing same offence.

However, in the early morning of yesterday, youths from Ugbene were said to have re-grouped and attacked some Ejuona people suspected to be the ring leaders of their people.

The youths reportedly attacked the house of one Emmanuel Onah among others and vandalised it, prompting policemen from the Nsukka Area Command to arrest some Ugbene people including a headmaster, Theophilus Ngwu alias Inter-State, Emeka Enyoka and one Sunday Nwa-Ejor, among about eight others whose sons and daughters were said to have carried out the reprisal attack.

Sources told Vanguard that the suspects, who were with the police, were arrested when their sons or daughters fled the town to evade arrest.

Meanwhile, the Police Area Commander for Nsukka, Mr. Monday Kuryasi, has invited seven leaders each from both Ejuona and Ugbene for a peace meeting with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwanyi at Government House, today.

It boggles the mind that in this 21st century, some still are locked in the mentality that some people are "SLAVES" & therefore won't be "allowed" to live "freely"!!

The laws should be slammed heavily on such backward & myopic thinking since christianity that preaches "love your neighbour...." hasn't had the desired effect on the lost souls...

P.S...This should put paid to the unnecessary & hate induced "slavery" chants!!

Very tragic state of affairs. To think that this is happening amongst a well-traveled, educated and exposed ethnicity in this day and age And in Enugu of all places?! Where are their elders? If they can treat each other so despicably, then I shudder to imagine their attitude towards outsiders in their midst.

Yet iPods were running their mouth yesterday with the daft statement that some northerners were treating other northerners like slaves, now the news is that entire Ibo communities are killing each other because they think the other party are ACTUAL slaves

Go read Chinua Achebe's Things fall apart and Buchi Emecheta's Bride Price and The Joys of Motherhood. Those books and many more will give you detailed insight into the discrimination; slavery; and Osu caste system that is still practised in iboland till date

We Igbos need to start advocating for the cessation of babaric practises like this in Alaigbo instead of insulting others

Ironically, this are the same people that would go to places like Lagos, Abuja, PH etc and that start demanding for equal political and social priveledges with the native of those places.

Mynd44 Lalasticlala please help us put this on the FP. It is an update on this issue that have made news since lasat week. We need to enlighten our people and advocate against these practises

I don't want to believe this is really happening.

This barbaric people with their Osu Caste mentality in 2016 AD is embarrassing to humanity and homo sapiens race.

The same set of people will go to other people's land and be demanding equal right. If they can be enslaving themselves, you can imagine what they will do to outsiders. No wonder, people do not migrate to the land of gully erosion and red mud.

Osu was no caste system and has nothing to do with slavery. White men created the Osu and Diala dichotomy in order to replace Igbo religion with Christianity. It is as good as calling Reverend sisters/Monks slaves or outcast or caste system with the Monks being the Osu. The only difference is that they are Monks of different religions with one being hereditory.

Now the reason it affects us is marriage. The same way Reverend sisters and Monks don't marry because Catholics accept celibacy is the same way the Monks of African religion marry only Monks and when a non-Monk marries one he/she becomes part of the Monks.
