CaptainECole:I doubt if this op have ever been to Covenant University, Ota, a visit and interraction with the faculties and students will give you a pointer to the fact that some private universities are far better than the so-called public universities. I attended FUNAAB/FUTA for Bachelor/Masters though. 4 Likes |

Sasuwa: Nor mind the Op. As far as I'm concern, no quality education in Nigeria. Education ought to be an atmosphere that give room for research and innovation. Nigerian Education is copy and paste including lecturers and student. Imagine one of my lecturer during my days in the university, was using her 200level note to teach us in class. Infact she was dictating it for you. No wonder we have universities and technology schools yet, Nigeria is yet to come out with a science invention that will shock the world. Sciences and Engineering in Nigeria is total joke. What we have in Nigeria is not quality education but quantity education. More reason you will do 23 course in a semester and can't even apply one of them in nature. Nigeria is still backward in education, be it private or public. Nigeria universities should even stop celebrating their first class because what they have is not an applied knowledge but a theoretical knowledge. I rest my case! 5 Likes |

I graduated from a first generation public school but I don't see it as a yardstick to see those from private schools as less human or dull. It is more about the person than the school. I have interacted with some private school graduates and they sounded very good. We have plenty olodo in public institution as well. The irony to Op post is that the private school graduates are the ones getting the good jobs nowadays. 10 Likes |

For someone like me, the closest I got to a private school was military and missionary schools. Depending on how you see it, the military one still qualifies as public. From experience, it's safe to say that public unis attract the best in the pack. A majority of those who go to private unis do so after several failed attempts at getting into the public ones. I remember when we first got into ABU, Zaria, a certain son to a Director at CBN, promised his dad that he was going to make at least a 2.2 prior...fast forward to the evening after our second econ 105 lecture, the guy placed a call to his dad saying he wouldn't cope. Said unless if the dad is okay with a pass degree, he should take him to AUN(ABTI). Na so the papa take comot the guy sharperly go AUN. . He made a 2.1 at AUN, and afterwards proceeded to the London School of Economics. In the end though, it boils down to the individual. Some people are excellence personified regardless where you place them. |

Public or private, what the student is able to offer his/her society, making him/her a functional being after leaving school matters alot.. Had it been muritala was left alone to do his thing would there be any private uni? Or if the so called public uni improved the facilities they had and expand their capacity would parents find alternatives? You think redtapism only exist in public unis, try some of the top private unis in the country. |

Na wa o. Private, Federal or State, if you don't have anything upstairs then........ You defend public, and you know how recurrent strike waste youthful time; You defend public talking about Professors, are those professors not the same people lecturing in private? So many good brains who were denied admission into Public universities, yet they graduated well from private and doing well in life. Whats with the stress/rigour that makes public university better? They don't face such rigours in foreign universities, yet public universities want emulate the foreign ones......we just like suffer for naija. There are do many people who can't defend any course they are taking/took in the public university, same with private. Really, its what you can offer with your brain, no one cares about your university. Those parents paying the private university fee attended public universities, you think they don't have a reason for doing that? 3 Likes |

CaptainECole: One condition for accreditation of any department by the NUC is having at least two professors in the department. Also, the fact that it is the same NUC that accredits both private and public universities and bearing in mind that such accreditation is based on the same benchmarks it will not be correct to say that one is significantly better than the other. Moreover, most private universities are owned by big churches with quite deep pockets and can afford to attract world class academics with fat salaries and research grants. I am a product of the public university system and currently teach at a federal polytechnic so I am just posting this to correct some wrong assumptions rather than defend private universities. 1 Like |

foldl:I beg to disagree, there are lots of private universities that have just 5 profs, I don't know what you're saying but 80% of private unis in Nigeria lack adequate amount of professors.. #Fact |
