On this day, April 27, 1994, first multi-racial elections were held in South Africa, meaning, all races, both blacks and whites were allowed to vote. Before 1994, blacks were forbidden to vote in south africa. The general election lasted for 3 days. Nelson mandela of the ANC party won the election and became the first black president of south africa. Mandela tenure as president ended in 1999, he didn’t contest for second term.
The date 27 April is now a public holiday in South Africa, it is called “Freedom Day” in south africa. Barrister nelson mandela joined Africa National Congress (Anc) in 1944, His Agitation for eqaul rights for blacks in South Africa sent him to 27 years in prison by the brutal white rulers.
