The Nigeria Governors Forum on Thursday asked the Federal Government to review the revenue sharing formula.

The governors insisted that what comes to them should be increased, stressing that states were the custodians of the natural resources in Nigeria.
The Chairman of the governors’ forum, Mr Abdullaziz Yari, disclosed this to State House correspondents after their meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on the way out of the economic crunch the states were facing.

Other demands include 18 months moratorium from the Federal Government on the bail out loans and the remitting of what they called ‘hanging funds’ owed them by the Federal Government after Nigeria’s exit from the Paris Club in 2005.

They lamented that a situation where some of them could not pay salaries of workers in their states was so embarrassing.

Beyond the bailout fund, the governors have listed a programme for the Federal Government to restructure the states’ economy in the short, medium and long terms.

According to Governor Yari of Zamfara State, President Buhari was said to have graciously accepted their demands.

He added that the President asked that a committee comprising the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, and the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, be set up to look into all the matters.

State government has in the last 16 years shouldered the bulk of Development projects across Nigeria.
State governments should get 50 or 60 percent of the shared revenue, while FG gets 30% and LGA gets 5 or 10 percent because they will steal it anyway.

Reviewing isn't the solution to solve the financial problem of state government..

Our Governors are greedy fools with no brain on how to cut down the cost of governance...

Somewhere in Benue a state governor is purchasing jeeps worth 17million for commissioners and he pleads with other state government workers earning little from 20k upwards that's there's no money to pay salaries... cry

Can't you buy a KIA car worth 3millions for your commissioners and pay all state government workers as at when due? cry embarassed embarassed

In my state Rochas embarassed embarassed is travelling around to attend irrelevant weddings around the country in a private jet and he's goes on begging state workers to endure with him concerning non payment of their salaries that the government is broke and allocation has reduced drastically
grin grin grin grin angry grin grin grin cheesy cheesy

Criminals cum mathematicians.

Instead of them to look for ways to improve internally generated revenue for their states and fulfill their campaign promises, they have put their tent in Abuja and will stop at nothing until the country is bankrupt.

Baba should trade with caution with these chameleon because they will come back to blame him in the future after decanting to NTA.

Instead of them to look inwards and find a way to increase IGR in their respective states, they are there looking for more allocation so that they can loot more funds. SMH

Let the sharing be resource based! What you contribute to the FG should be directly proportional to what you get from the FG! QED

This is hypocrisy of the highest nature. It is in good faith that the president accepted this. But he doesn't know how bad the system is when it comes to the rogues we call governors. What have they done to the local governments as a tier in the executive?. Even though good, I say NO! To this. We will eventually get there.

This is not the solution. True federalism should b practiced and also Local Governments should be on their own so developments can reach the grassroots. This sharing of money is making some states lazy about improving their IGR.

The solution to Nigeria's problem will be to go back to the regional form of government. Every region will grow at their own pace and it will spur rapid development in the different regions.

I do not quite agree with this. I think federal government has more responsibilities. Apart from road constructions across the country, FG is responsible for power generation, security healthcare (partly) which are all capital intensive.
If state governments want more money, then they should be ready to shoulder more responsibilities, like state police, start generating their own power.
The long term solution is for state governors to become more creative in generating money.

To justify an increase in states revenue, the FG must also decentralise its responsibilities. The state governments cannot just demand and receive more revenue without commensurate increase in responsibilities. Again, the states cannot remain babies forever. They must start to generate a substantial percentage of their revenue and exercise more control over resources. Bottle feeding has to stop!

The right call in the face of recent challenges should be for better and close knit regional cooperation among states, direct responsibility for mundane things like primary and secondary education, intetnal policing/security, complete responsibility for health other than teaching hospitals belonging to Federal Universities, full control of resources with agreed remittances to the Federal Government, power and energy development, tertiary education in partnership with the FG and so on.

The FG should then concern itself with the Armed forces and external security, foreign relations, tertiary education, uniform policies ensuring a benchmark or level of development which all regions must meet. Those that can go further are encouraged to do so too.
This then justifies more money for the states.

Each state in Nigeria is capable of generating its own funds but these baboons and former 419ers that used wuruwuru to become governors are clueless.

This is the same sharing palaver that dumped Nigeria in this economic mess we are in now.

Just take a look at them, in a sane country will these dirty looking people be in charge of anything?
Governors my foot!
They keep borrowing and sharing but not generating thereby putting the states in future poverty.

We know Nigeria is corrupt, we know we all have it in our dna but how can you see the suffering on the streets and you have the power to change it all yet you choose to loot what can better the lives of everybody?

Let nobody be fooled, we know Nigeria is in dire straits because of decades of misrule but these governors can change it all in 4 years if only they are pained about the low quality of life that the people are living but read my lips, they don't care.

Why are we so peaceful?

Evil abounds when the good keep silent

The president should tell them :No review until we see their performance ..they are busy spending huge cash as security votes like Jonathan but couldn't meet up with basic needs of their states ..plunged states to huge debt now that their spending capabilities are reduced they are agitating for free fund..No way for them this time around . what have they done with excess crude oil funds shared in the past ..Abandon project here and there. Let stop being sentimental some of these govs are vandals in Govt houses

Exactly! This is what true federalism would look like, not the mess we have today wherein the FG insists on retaining monopoly control of almost every aspect of the economy. Currently federal government ineptitude means all states must suffer from bad policies, but with a more deregulated system it would be easier for states to experiment, and the laggards could then learn from the leaders what works and what doesn't.

Is it unconstitutional for state governments to generate revenue (not just collecting taxes) by running profit making outfits/companies to the extent of not depending exclusively on FG monthly allocation for survival?

We talk of diversifying the economy, is it just at the Federal level?

What are state governments doing/can do to diversify their states' economies away from the apron strings of FG, financially?
