Why Have We All Neglected The Grass Root? by fiadefemi(m): 11:59am On Nov 18, 2006
Governance at the grass root remains a very crucial issue that we need to seriously address in Nigeria. Most of our concerns are concentrated at the federal level and some at the state level. But the people by our door steps go looting our treasury unnoticed. We have 774 local government areas in Nigeria.

We hear little or nothing about the activities of the chairmen, councilors and supervisory councilors but a lot of money goes in to that level of governance every month. They get billions of naira allocations every time and nothing seems to be happening at the grass root.

It has so much be neglected that we have even illiterates holding positions of authorities at this level of governance. Not only that they are illiterate but they are not at all fit to represent you and I.

The allocation varies from excess of N80million to N300million for each local govt. All the 774 LGA got N108.9billion for October 2006 (http://www.fmf.gov.ng/fileupload/lgc_FAAC_Sept2006.pdf). Let all imagine how much this could had affected positive changes in the country if we all give it concern as much as we give the federal level of governance.

It is high time we divert some of our attentions to the grass root,

God bless Nigeria

Many of the grassroots are illiterate, yet you don't support illiterates in politics.
This means the grassroots can't govern themselves? What does "governance" imply anyway? Taxation?

If the grass root as you call them, don't know their left from the right how would they know how much is allocated to them for their well being as citizens? How many grass root knows his or her right as a citizen and how many leaders knows his right and the right of the citizen he is governing? angry

As long as they can manupulate your mind, body, soul for their taking to them they are doing you a favor. angry

Which grassroot?  The one constantly in a state of diabolical stupor?

All you need is to give them "grass roots" to keep smoking away thier lives and remain senseless for ever! kiss

@Poster, you have a good case here. Only that dealing with those at the local level is like trying to pull teeth sometimes, from the much I have experienced of it. Worse is , as Seun pointed out, many are not educated and so it is not easy.LMAO!!

The root of our political problems starts with the neglect of governance at the grassroots. The Military had nothing to do with Local government politics and the effects linger on. The  Nigerian elite are usually less than humble to start their political education at the grassroots. A case in point is Pat Utomi who was a novice but his 1st shot at an elective position was contesting for the Presidency.

If more sucessfull people get involved in Local Government Politics, the impact will be more keenly felt by the generality of the people.
