Three soldiers attached to the military Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, were feared dead on Tuesday after an ambush by gunmen in Bayelsa State. The soldiers were part of a team combing the Niger Delta creeks for militants who have renewed attacks on oil installations. A group called Niger Delta Avengers on Friday claimed responsibility for attacks on Shell facility at Forcados, Chevron Okan platform at Abiteye in Escravos as well as pipelines transporting oil to the Warri and Kaduna refineries. Security sources told PREMIUM TIMES that latest incident Monday night in Foropa, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, where troops had been stationed since 2010. Residents of the community were said to be fleeing the community for fear of a raid and indiscriminate arrest of innocent persons.
