Saudi Arabia beheads Nigerian
National News Aug 14, 2009 Amnesty International Thursday again expressed concern about the execution of foreign nationals in Saudi Arabia, after news emerged of the beheading of a Nigerian man there last week.

Qorbi bin Mussa Adam, who was convicted of murdering a Saudi national, was the second Nigerian to be executed in Saudi Arabia this year. The other Nigerian, Jamil ‘Abbas Shu’ayb, was beheaded in May.

In both cases, the Saudi Arabian authorities have disclosed very little information about their trials but Amnesty International said that these are likely to have been held in secret and to have been summary, as in the case of Suliman Olyfemi, another Nigerian who remains at imminent risk of execution in Saudi Arabia. He was sentenced to death in 2004.

Suliman Olyfemi’s trial was held in secret and conducted in Arabic, which he does not understand, without adequate interpretation facilities.  He had no legal representation or any legal assistance.

It is feared that he was tortured while held incommunicado in pre-trial detention to force him to “confess”.

Qorbi bin Mussa Adam was the 51st person to be executed in Saudi Arabia this year, according to Amnesty International’s monitoring. As in previous years, the figures reflect a disproportionately high rate of executions of Africans and Asians. Of the 51 people executed so far this year, 36 were Saudi Arabians, out of a population of some 21 million, while 15 executions were of foreign nationals residing in Saudi Arabia, who number approximately six million.

In 2008, the Saudi Arabian government executed, on average, more than two people a week. Almost half of them were foreign nationals from developing countries, including Nigeria.
The government of Saudi Arabia uses the death penalty for a wide range of offences, including offences which are ill-defined or do not have lethal consequences.

The process by which the death penalty is imposed and carried out is harsh, largely secretive and grossly unfair.
Executions in Saudi Arabia are generally held in public, and are in some cases followed by crucifixion of the bodies.
Saudi Arabian judges have wide discretion and can hand down death sentences for vaguely-worded and non-violent offences.

Some migrant workers are reported to have even been unaware that they had been sentenced to death until the very morning of their execution. The Saudi Arabian government’s continuing high use of the death penalty runs counter to the growing international trend towards abolition and the UN General Assembly’s adoption in 2007 and 2008 of resolutions calling for a worldwide moratorium on executions.

According to Amnesty International, 139 countries in the world have abolished the death penalty in law or practice.

Amnesty International called on the Saudi Arabian government to establish an immediate moratorium on executions and to commute all outstanding death sentences as a first step towards abolition.

The death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights, said Amnesty International. It is the premeditated and cold-blooded killing of a human being by the state in the name of justice. It violates the right to life as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.

Am not in support of drug smugglers or killers or 419ers or just lazy like to live off personalities; but I've always known that these saudi arabia and many of those villages in that region were and have always been backward set of humans. I've nothing to say to a terrorist nation like that only if we had a feasible govt that can perform domestically and put saudis and co in their place (at the bottom) internationally.

I definitely feel this was unjust.
First of all, from my experience living outside of Nigeria,Nigerian  immigrants are usually not into violent crimes like murder .
They are usually hard working immigrants who want to take care of their families back home and would do any type of menial job to do just that and educate them selves when the opportunity arises,to get ahead ,the few that have murdered people here have been wife abusers and the victims have been the wives.
In all my years here I've never heard of a Nigerian that murdered an American.

Secondly the trial in these places are very unfair.Arabs hate Africans with a passion .The boy probably had no counsel,he obviously couldn't understand the language he was tried in,some are even tried in absentia and sentenced to death. They can't appeal, they are treated like sallah rams and disposed off yet Nigeria spends millions sending people to this unholy place for pilgrimage.
What a shame
a very big shame.
How many Americans or Britons has Saudi beheaded?
They know these countries care for their citizens and would come down hard on them if they as much as detained their citizens without probable cause.
They know we have a mumu non government
That's why a Nigerian citizen can be slaughtered in Saudi and Libya and there's no outrage and severance of ties with these places.
This is very very sad.
There are families obviously mourning for their loved ones.May God comfort them and show them his Grace.

Another bizarre story , we are yet to solve the planned execution of 200 Nigerians in Libya .

I think drastic measures should be made in discouraging people from traveling to places like this for there safety.

But i know its almost impossible for the Nigerian Populace to accept.

We await government's reaction to all this crazy madness.

These Saudis are a bunch of xenophobic evil devils!

The death penalty has become a method of immigration (unskilled labor) control!
