SUSPECTED vandals on Tuesday invaded Ubima community in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, the home of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and stole four transformers that provided electricity to the area.

We learnt that the vandals had stormed the village around 11pm and shot several bullets into the air to cause panic.

A source in the community told our correspondent that the area was thrown into panic because of the heavy shootings from the vandals.

The source said there was no power when the incident happened, adding that the darkness aided the vandalism.

He noted that people of the area thought the shootings were from the rampaging cultists, explaining that there had been cult-related activities in the area.

It was gathered that the vandals had entered the community in a Toyota Hilux, and used the vehicle to take the four transformers away.

“The community had six electricity transformers powering it, but the vandals stole four”, the source said.

The Community Development Committee Chairman of Ubima, Mr. Kingdom Elem, said members of the electricity committee had been arrested.

Elem said the persons arrested on Wednesday were being interrogated at the Elele Police Division, adding that the CDC, after its next meeting, would come up with a plan to reconnect the community.

The Rivers State Police Command spokesman, Mr. Ahmad Muhammad, who confirmed the incident, said the information at his disposal showed that no person had been arrested.

He said,

“The matter was reported, and the police sighted a truck carrying transformers at the Etche area of the state, but when they got there, they did not see anybody.”
