He said: “UNIPORT will be reopened for academic activities on Monday, May 23 to enable students pursue their academic dreams. The University of Port Harcourt is to reopen for academic activities on May 23 after 43 days of closure, following a violent student protest. The Deputy Registrar (Information) of the university, Dr. Williams Wodi, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. Wodi said authorities of the university decided to reopen the institution to enable students pursue their academic activities. He said: “UNIPORT will be reopened for academic activities on Monday, May 23 to enable students pursue their academic dreams. “The first semester examinations will also begin on May 23 and end on June 18. “The first semester break begins from June 20 to July 1, while second semester begins on July 3.” On April 11, some students of the university protested over a “no tuition no examination” policy, which compelled defaulting students to repeat a whole academic session. The violent protest led to the death of a final year student, Peter Ofurum, who was of the faculty of management sciences. The protesting students destroyed property valued at millions of naira. The students had demanded the withdrawal of the policy, which they argued, was unfair to poor students. NAN. http://theeagleonline.com.ng/uniport-set-to-reopen-after-violent-protest/ |
