Police Avert Igbo Groups’ Clash In Kano by ichommy(m): 9:34am On Aug 17, 2009
THE KANO State police command, on Saturday, averted what could have resulted in bloodshed as two Igbo groups clashed in a supremacy battle.

The incident occurred at Sarki/Yarki on Court road, Sabongari, Kano, when some people, believed to be members of Enugu State indigenes in Kano, went to the house of their former president, Chief Nnaji Nnaji and demanded the handing over of the certificate-of-occupancy (C-of-O) of a house belonging to the association.

The said members were said to have been aggrieved as a result of a chieftaincy title that was to be conferred on Chief Nnaji.

Speaking with newsmen, on Saturday, the current president of association, Chief Chris Ene, said what the people were demanding from Chief Nnaji were necessary documents in his possession which belonged to the association.

The president, who said the association had initially nominated Chief Boniface Ibekwe for the chieftaincy title, said Chief Nnaji could bag any chieftaincy title after he had released documents belonging to the association, adding that he was being used to undermine the reputation of Enugu indigenes in the state.

While speaking with Chief Ibekwe, he said he was duly elected by the majority of Igbo Community Association (ICA) in Kano State for the title.

He said before his nomination, Chief Nnaji was contacted whether or not he was interested in the position and he declined, adding that two people could not bear the same title in the state.

However, a source who preferred anonymity, while speaking with newsmen, said the Eze Ndigbo title given to Chief Ibekwe was not genuine, adding that he imposed himself on Igbo through a kangaroo election.

While the tussle between the two group was ongoing, the police, acting on a tip off, moved to the house of Chief Nnaji to prevent a breakdown of law and order, and arrested some men who were bent on causing trouble.

Attempt to speak with the state Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Baba Muhammed, did not yield result. However, a source within the police stated that security operative could not fold its arms and allow power tussle to cause crisis in the state.
