A lubricant is a substance introduced to reduce friction between moving surfaces. There are various types of lubricants used in vehicles and each one has a specific purpose and use. Examples include: motor oil; gear oil; transmission fluid; wheel bearing and chassis grease and the list goes on. The main function of a lubricant is to reduce friction, which would in turn reduce the wear and damage on moving parts of your vehicle. Other uses include:
- cooling engine hot spots and moving parts;

- ensuring that engine parts remain clean;

- Acting as a sealant and ensuring leak tightness between engine parts;

- protecting the inner surfaces of the engine against corrosion.

How do I choose the right lubricant for my vehicle?

Whether you’re looking for better performance from your vehicle or improved reliability in your motorbike or truck, it’s essential that you get your lubricant right. Using the correct lubricant keeps your engine running smoothly and facilitates the longevity of your vehicle.

Here are some useful tips on choosing the right lubricant for your vehicle:

1. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations:

Consult the section in the vehicle's maintenance guide concerning lubrication to get guidance on viscosity levels and other lubricant performance requirements. Often times, it very funny that most of the car owners in Nigeria don't even know they have users manuals in their respective vehicles, whereas the fortunate few that knew they possess it, hardly opened their vehicle users manual for the right Lube. Bad enough, even our sole called engineers (mechanics) who are supposed to be the saviour are not even aware or they would be busy looking for substandard/cheap products so as to get more out of their customers. I advice you KNOW.

2. Use the correct lubricant type to suit your vehicle type.

There are various categories of vehicles, for example: Cars; Motorcycles & Scooters; Trucks and Buses; Off-Road vehicles. They all have different engine specifications, which operate under different conditions. In light of this, there are specific lubricants formulated for specific categories of vehicles and it is important to purchase the right lubricant for your category of vehicle. Three most important/sensitive parts are; The engine( Motor/Engine oil), Transmission fluids (ATF), Brakes (Brake Fluids)

3. Use brands that are certified and keep up with Technological Innovations:

Engine lubricants must consistently evolve toward higher performance levels, linked to engine advances, use, manufacturer requirements, and requirements of users and law-makers. Choose brands that are API (American Petroleum Institute) and ACEA (Association of European Automotive Manufacturers) certified. Also choose brands that embrace innovation and are always making advances to ensure optimal performance and at the same time are environmentally responsible.

Every vehicle manufacturers has designed a specified lubricants suitable for their kind of vehicles. Hence, there are also aftermarket lubes which are also very suitable for use where the the specified are not available. Also there a lot substandard/cheap products which might seem cheap but at long run damaging your systems... Please take note.

Do Not rely on your Mechanics
